Winchester Repeating Arms Introduces the Speed Pump Defender Shotgun

By Richard on February 12, 2008 15 Comments

U.S. Repeating Arms, the manufacturer of Winchester-branded rifles and shotguns, announced they were closing the New Haven, CT plant in January 2006. Much of the firearms community believed that we would never see another new Winchester rifle or shotgun. Winchester Repeating Arms was at the 2008 SHOT show and proved the doubters wrong.

Winchester Speed Pump Defender Shotgun

Winchester Repeating Arms, showed several new guns at the 2008 SHOT show, including the new Speed Pump Defender shotgun.  Winchester claims that the Speed Pump is the “fastest pump [shotgun] ever.”  That is a pretty bold statement, and I look forward to getting one of these on the range to test out.

The Speed Pump Defender looks a lot like the old Model 1300 Defender. The Winchester shotgun features a chrome-lined 18″ barrel and can handle buckshot and slugs. The Defender shotgun holds 5+1 three-inch 12-gauge shells making it a solid component in your home defense plan.

The new Winchester Defender shotgun sports a synthetic stock with integral recoil pad, and the fore arm is aggressively ridged allowing a sure grip in stressful situations. The metal surfaces have a matte black finish, which eliminates any glare that you might get from shiny parts.

MSRP on the new Winchester Speed Pump Defender is $299.

Actually, it was going to be manufactured in Turkey…however, Winchester decided not to manufacture this firearm.

Winchester has decided to produce a replacement shotgun, the Super X Pump, due out in the third quarter of 2009. It will retail around the same price point ($300 or so), and will also be made in Turkey.

Of course, all of this is subject to change, but it is current as of 30 seconds ago when I got off the phone with my contact at Winchester.

I am a private citizen with a CWP in the state of SC. I am looking for a weapon that I could use as defense of my home and also one that could be left with my wife for defense should I be gone. Trouble with my hand guns is that she can’t pull the slide back to start the action and I’m afraid to leave her with a revolver. Is your defender shotgun one that a woman of average strength can handle?? If it is, where can I order one?

    Hi Fred,

This isn’t a direct answer to your question, but here goes…

It seems the best investment for your money is to have a firearms instructor, with experience in teaching self defense, spend a few hours with your wife. If she is going to use the firearm (shotgun or otherwise), she needs to get good, professional instruction.

No offense, but husbands are not normally the best source of instruction. Even if you are a great teacher, she brings all of the relationship baggage to the range with you. If she is on her own with a pro instructor, she can leave all of that behind and just work on firearms.

Virtually any adult can operate the slide on virtually any semi-auto…it is a matter of technique, not strength. The strength needed to keep a mounted shotgun on a suspect for any length of time is much more than that needed to operate a slide. Again, an instructor will help.

If a Winchester shotgun is what she desires, support your local dealer and order one up through them.

    I hope this is helpful.

Will this shotgun made in Turkey be a turkey? I’ll wait till after it has been tested against the U.S.-made Mossbert 500.

Yeah; let’s buy American because it’ll be better. Most of the parts are manufactured overseas or otherwise out of the country but its better because its “AMERICAN MADE!!!!!”. Ignorance is bliss though I suppose. I’m just glad to see the Winchester pump gun back in production; I could give a shit if it was made on Mars, just as long as it performs. A Winchester is going to outperform a clunky Mossberg any day; always has and always will.

Hi I was curious…I’m a lefty yay nothing in this world is made for me..bummer dude right? Well I got a glock which kicks the crap outa the Cheapo that I bought at 21 where I gotta use my right hand to knock the saftey now I’m in the market for a nice compact Shotgun to replace my browning stalker that has a barrel thats 100 ft long! I was diggin around found the new Winchester Super X Pump defender looks nice I was originaly leaning tword the Mossberg 590A1 the one thing that I’m most concerned about is the saftey no one ever talks about where the saftey is!!! is the Saftey on the wrong side of the Gun on the SXP (like all the others its seems) or is it on top like the Mossberg? this would help greatly in my persuit of a decent weapon. thanks

PS I always buy from small dealers but it seems that American weapons arent what they used to be… I would love to buy a nice American made firearm but the only ones I have ever found have been along the lines of High points, and Jaminez’s, (look’em up…you’ll see) good for about 1000 rounds then its a paper weight that jams. So in answer to the buy American comment….I would love to but I just cant find something that I find reliable.. but I do buy from mom and pop shops that you pretty much have to have everything ordered but they back what they sell and ya get good service and thats where my money goes, i dont even mind paying more to get the personal service. I’ve always looked at buying a gun like finding a girlfriend its not only a big decision but a personal Exspierance (please forgive spelling its late and I just switched shifts so I’m Beat)

I have owned my Winchesters for most of my 54 years. And I will never ever buy a new shotgun or rifle even if it carries the Winchester name, if it is built outside of the United States. In fact this year I bought another shotgun a Mossberg because it was made in New Haven. It is far from the quality of my Winnie 120 but it is made here in the United States. And that means that at least one company is still giving jobs to Americans. BUY AMERICAN!!!!!
