For a variety of reasons (like possible bans and wild price increases), a lot of people are interested in stocking up on ammunition and methods of storing ammo for a long period of time. You can conquer both tasks by finding good mil-surp ammo already stored in “spam cans.” Mil-surp ammo is normally packaged for long term storage, so buying some that is still in the original military packaging is a good idea.
I got an e-mail from J&G Sales saying they have Wolf .223 ammo in Russian-style spam cans in stock and ready to ship at $145/500 round can. These are non-corrosive, steel cased, 55 grain FMJ cartridges. J&G is not a sponsor and I don’t make a dime off any of their sales. This seemed like a good deal for anyone looking for long term storage .223 ammo, so I figured I would pass it along.
Other articles that will amaze you:
Yes, it is one of the least expensive ammo out there, but beware.
The coating on the round tends to melt with the hot barrel, and gums-up the barrel.
It has happened on my AR.
I still have a hand full of the steel case round, but I make sure that the last round put into the mag, (the first round shot) is that.
Otherwise, pay a little more and get the Gold line or any other brass case ammo.
Good luck.
Dave,
I used to think the same thing. The old Wolf “laquered” ammo melted and would leave you with a round “glued” in your barrel. The newer polymer coated is great stuff. This past Saturday, I shot over 400 rounds of it in my AR-15. I have shot over 3000 rounds total with not one problem. Just FYI on the Wolf….
Randy,
Thanks for sharing your experiences with the polymer Wolf.
FYI, the Wolf looks to be sold out. However, J&G is now offering the 55 gr mil-spec Silver Bear in a 700 round spam-can for storage at $210.
