Permits to purchase ammunition is but one of the new gun control laws the Durham, NC city council wants to impose on its citizens in 2009.
The Durham city council is putting together an agenda to present to the state legislature next year. One of the main topics: ammunition control.
A local minister, Rev. Melvin Whitley, has been pushing for North Carolina to adopt his proposal for ammunition regulation modeled on Illinois law. The proposal would require a citizen to obtain a permit from the local sheriff prior to purchasing any ammunition. Additionally, the proposal would ban certain people from purchasing ammunition. For example, the proposal would make it illegal for anyone to purchase ammunition if they have been convicted of a domestic battery, which is already illegal under 18 U.S.C. § 921(a).
Councilwoman Cora Cole-McFadden and Councilman Howard Clement have indicated that they support this proposal. Additionally, Whitley is looking to assemble a coalition of anti-gun groups like ACORN and the NAACP to push his proposal and further infringe on the rights of the citizens of North Carolina.
So, this call to action should sound familiar if you are a regular reader of this site. Everyone needs to be a NRA member and needs to get active in their local politics. Anti-gun legislation and politicians often come from the local level.
Contact Councilwoman Cora Cole-McFadden through e-mail or call her at (919) 560-4396 ext. 277 or (919) 477-2484. Contact Councilman Howard Clement through e-mail or call him at (919) 682-5211. The contact information for the other councilmen and-women can be found at the Durham City Council web site.
When contacting these men and women, politely express your opposition to this proposal. Rudeness is never acceptable and is only counter-productive.

Those of us in Durham need to move fast and oppose this. I have emails in to City Council this morning after hearing yesterday that a hearing is planned for Thurs the 8th, tomorrow. Council’s website has no mention of it, is anyone surprised? Let’s get busy with e mails and phone calls, see if some of us can show up at the hearing.
I’m a cop, a former dental surgeon, and also a former instructor of firearms at a police academy and a Life Member of the Texas Concealed Handgun Instructor Association. In other words, I know people, guns, and crime; and I’m no dummy. The proposed restrictions that the city leaders of Durham are trying to foist off on the citizens that they supposedly represent are illogical, emotionally fueled, and designed to appeal to an uneducated populace that thrives on feel-good legislation that accomplishes nothing positive. This–along with the likes of George Soros, Diane Feinstein, Charles Schumer, most of the Kennedys, Mayor Daley, and all of the other rabid anti-gun people–is one of those things that tends to make a mockery of our Constitution and constitutional laws. Why not just destroy all of the monuments to the founding fathers and other historical figures who devoted their lives to creating our country to be a land of personal freedoms and have done with it, rather than gradually chipping away at our rights? I guess it’s just another example of an attempt to gradually raise the water temperature in a pan of water till a frog finally boils to death.
Eventually, under the new Obama regime, the only people who will have guns/ammo will be the criminals and the government (military and LE). Us law abiding citizens will become defenceless victims… Sharp sticks don’t quite cut it when someone has leveled a gun at you.
This is a true shame and really a disgrace for those of us who are law abiding citizens exercising our rights/privileges of the constitution. I can honestly say that I am ashamed to be a Durham County resident. Why don’t they focus on cleaning up the image of Durham and crime instead permit on top of permit. Criminals and those who wish to do harm have always found a way!
Tell Mr. Minister to stick with the Bible ! What is it with these loudmouth ministers who think they can influence govt. laws. There’s a clause in this country that seperates church and state, so the church should have no political pull whatsoever ! NC is a pro-gun state and here’s a liberal, gun bashing, phoney minister trying to infringe upon the peoples 2nd Amendment rights !
Hey Rev, take your anti 2nd amendment rhetoric and your bible and go pound sand ! Next time you need a suppository I hope you grab a 45-70 cartridge by mistake !
