LA City Council Proposes New Anti-Gun Measures: “No one spoke in opposition…”

By Richard

The Los Angeles city council is considering a host of new anti-gun measures.  Under the guise of “anti-gang” legislation, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilman Greig Smith and Councilman Jack Weiss, introduced the following:

  • a ban on the sale of .50 caliber ammunition
  • a ban of all mail order ammunition sales
  • a requirement that anyone selling ammunition purchase a permit from the police department
  • all employees handling ammunition submit to city background checks
  • bi-annual inspections of firearm dealers inventories to ensure no guns are stolen or lost

“I’m proud that I’ve worked on gun legislation my entire time in the City Council. It’s a sick industry…,” said Weiss.

The state of California already has some of the strictest gun regulations in the United States.  It would seem that the chokehold the state has tried to put on honest citizens who want to own firearms is not working to reduce crime or combat gang problems.  But, somehow, the politicians see more regulation of law abiding citizens will somehow reduce criminal activity.

The most telling part of the LA Times story on the proposals was this: no one spoke in opposition to the proposals.  No one.  Not a single citizen made the time to go down and speak out against these proposed abridgement of our rights.

PLEASE!  Get involved!  I’ve said before that a lot of problems, both legislation and legislators, come from the local level.  This is another example of that.  If the residents of Los Angeles get involved, there may still be time to affect these proposals.
