Think Ammunition Prices Are High Now? Ammo Prices Set to Go Up Again on January 1

By Richard

Ammunition Prices Increase Expensive AmmoI got an e-mail from Natchez Shooters Supplies warning of another ammunition price increase set to take place on January 1, 2009.  The price increases come from the factory and range from 5-12%.  This falls in line with my prior posts on ammunition price increases.

Natchez is a good business and I do not believe they are trying to gouge their customers.  But, with the current demand on ammunition, prices do rise.  So, if you are thinking about buying some ammo, sooner rather than later might be the smart investment.

Humm… oil is down, commodities are down, copper is down, lead is down, and deflation is hitting the economy … hard.

But ammo is going up. Sounds like a screw over to me..

I’ve got to agree with Robert, all we heard when the price of everything was high was because of the demand from China and India, their econonies (and demands) are tanking now so why the increase ?
I smell artificial market manipulation (aka the government) going on!

STOP BUYING AMMO! If we do that for a while, then prices will go DOWN! It happened with gas, so it can certainly happen with ammo. Most of us already have plenty of ammo to last for several years anyway……the only people that this really hurts (high ammo prices) is the “Johnny come lately s” who SHOULD HAVE gotten stuff way back when. Glad I bought all of my 7.62×39 back when it was $70 a case. You think I am gonna pay $300 a case for it NOW? Hell no! I have been warning people for years that this was going to happen. None of them wanted to stock up on guns or ammo back then. Now that Obamamania has swept the nation, people are clamoring for anything that shoots. Many of these same people probably sat at home during the election and did not vote (simply because they didn’t like McCain) instead of voting AGAINST Obama. These people probably could have made the difference and we wouldn’t be sitting here today bitch**g about high ammo prices and the very real prospect of losing our guns!

where is all the brass going, copper and lead for ammos, hum? wonder where ammo demand is high in the world now, where are stock piles of .223 7.62 and 50bmg, , oh well guess we will never know why ammo is so high now

$300/per case is bad, but mark my words…in a few years, $300/case will look like a great deal. First, people are not gonna stop buying ammo in hopes of it going back down. Yes, this would be the thing to do; but it goes against human nature, and it’s not gonna happen. Second, in the not-too-far future, Obama and Company are going to levy [another] tax on ammo, much like was recently done on tobacco. Now, loose tobacco has a tax on it that equals more than the tobacco itself. An ammo tax (really a form of gun control) is coming, and it could easily be a 200% tax. So again, that $300/case ammo could easily be costing $500+ in a few years. All the nay-sayers can keep their heads buried in the sand, but that won’t stop it from happening.

Now, whether all this ammo is ever gonna get used or not is a completely different question. Just because some of you have a stock pile of it does not mean that the modern world is gonna come crashing to a halt and you will get to use it defending the flag, your family, and friends. Right beside that ammo are cases of freeze dried food, and a mountain of MREs. Are [some of] you prudent for getting emergency supplies laid-up? Certainly not…..but the hoarding and stock piling could be too much. Chances are that most of these items will go not used, at least for the intentions that you thought they would be used for.

Just checked world metal prices for copper & lead. Current prices is same as 5 years ago, both have dropped back to 2004/5 levels when I could get WWB 9mm for $5/50 & 45ACP for $11/50. It’s time to stop blaming materials costs and be honest — right now it’s just plain old high demand combined with the manufacturers charging what they know we will pay. I bet they are making a nice profit now that commodities are back down and demand is still high.

I am lining with Bill T on this one. Cabelas has had a sign up by their ammo for long time apologizing for the increased costs due to materials. Metals have been dropping since Sept/Oct 2008, so what gives? Just my wallet. Another chance for some to make a lot more money and take/create advantage of us.

Ken you’re an idiot!! Just in the sense that sitting at home moaning and groaning during the election, the few people that did stay home during the election would not change the outcome, if every single person in a state with less electoral leverage voted against obama we would still have the same outcome.

I cant believe people are buying ammo at these prices.Even 9mm is going up.Like it has been said the war is even winding down, metal prices are dropping and gas has stabilized for the time being. The weird thing the NRA isnt even talking about it.I called Sierra about 6 months ago and the guy there acted as if there was nothing wrong. You can only hoard so much ammo.

As of now, (late july, 2009) ammunition manufactures still see the demand for ammunition to be inelastic, meaning that price changes do not affect the demand for ammunition so much. In fact, it seems that the higher they charge for ammo, the more people get freaked out, and the more they buy and hoard ammunition. Last summer, gas companies assumed that the demand for gas was inelastic, and started charging $4.00+ a gallon. Of course there were other reasons gas was so high, but if they thought people would just stop buying gas like they did, the price increase would have been muffled substantially. Well guess what, people got sick of it and started driving less, and this summer, prices are at a healthy $2.50. So STOP BUYING!! Show these ammunition manufactures that we have the potential to stop buying ammunition, and they will eventually be forced to lower their prices. Sure it may be a leap of faith, but if a decent amount of people just stop buying, it WILL work.
