Michael S. Steele, RNC Chairman, on Gun Control and Gun Rights

By Richard on January 30, 2009 7 Comments

The Republican National Committee elected a new chairman today: Michael S. Steele. Steele, a former lieutenant governor of notoriously anti-gun Maryland, will lead the Republican party in the coming years. The Republican party has traditionally been the major party that favors gun rights. Will Steele support gun rights?

I’m not so sure.

In an October 16, 2006 Washington Post interview, Steele was asked “Should people have access to buy assault weapons?” Steele’s response:

“Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you’re going hunting? That’s overkill. But I don’t think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that” (emphasis added)

When asked his general views on gun control, Steele stated:

“I grew up under some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. You can have all the gun control laws in the country, but if you don’t enforce them, people are going to find a way to protect themselves. We need to recognize that bad people are doing bad things with these weapons. It’s not the law-abiding citizens, it’s not the person who uses it as a hobby.”

That doesn’t sound like someone who understands anything about the Second Amendment or the truth around so-called “assault weapons.”

So, let me say this to Steele: the Second Amendment isn’t about hunting or sport. It is about an inalienable right granted to us by God, and codified in the United States Constitution as one of those things that the government is not allowed to interfere with. Please educate yourself if you expect to receive the support of gun owners.

It appears that the Republican party is still controlled by RINO’s.

They think the only way they can win an election is to promise more goodies to the generally dumb public than the Demorats do.

The (R) folks need to ask themselves two questions:

Have you noticed that your opposition actually steps to the right several steps beyond your candidates in all the elections you loose?

How is that working out for you?

“You can have all the gun control laws in the country, but if you don’t enforce them, people are going to find a way to protect themselves.”

What?!?!? Is he really saying that Gun laws are meant to prevent people from protecting themselves? I mean, I know it’s one of the ulterior motives of gun control but to come right out and say it like that wow.

As much as I dislike the dem. platform, the best thing they can do right now is come out in support of the 2nd amendment. I really don’t care what’s after their name, it’s what they do that counts.

I thought I liked this guy when he ran for president… but I’m not so sure now…what’s his malfunction? Self defense is a God-given RIGHT, (supposedly) protected by the Constitution and codified in LAW.
Look: it’s painfully simple: protect yourself or be a victim. That’s it.
If the bad guys are using guns, you use a gun. If they are using assault weapons, you need an assault weapon.
Of course nowadays in the era of PC’ness, whoever defines terms for you controls your life…i.e.; whatever they call an “assault weapon” they will try to ban you from having one…heck…a pistol can be an assault weapon if they want to call it one.
We’ve seen an increase in crime in our town; bank robberies in broad daylight, muggings, etc. And still the libs want to cry “gun freaks”. One of the most liberal newspapers here in Arkansas obtained a list of conceal carry permit holders (presumably under FOIA) and published it on their website! I can think of a dozen reasons why this shouldn’t have happened.
But there’s one reason it might be beneficial: if a would-be felon tries to break into my house, guess what will be waiting for him/her on the other side?

im not sure about the statement the right to bear arms is a right given to us by God. He didnt create guns so how could he give us that right. the founding fathers gave us that right.

Jordan, the right to a ‘gun’ is not necessarily God-given. What Charliegirl probably meant to say is that self-defense is God-given. In this era, that defense takes the form of the firearm.

Since I can’t run and my karate sucks I carry a gun for protection against those who would do me harm.
