New Senate Bill to “Close the Gunshow Loophole” Introduced

By Richard on April 22, 2009 2 Comments

Yesterday, Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced a Senate bill designed to eliminate the private transfers of firearms.

Lautenberg, Jack Reed (D-RI), and Diane Feinstein (D-CA) met with Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (formerly known as Handgun Control, Inc.) to introduce this legislation.  The Senate bill already has 11 co-sponsors.

Co-sponsors include:

  • Dick Durbin (D-IL)
  • Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)
  • Charles Schumer (D-NY)
  • John Kerry (D-MA)
  • Ted Kennedy (D-MA)
  • Carl Levin (D-MI)
  • Ben Cardin (D-MD)
  • Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
  • Robert Menendez (D-NJ)

Using the survivors of the Virginia Tech mass murder as a photo op, Lautenberg, Reed, Feinstein, and Helmke showed they have no shame and will stoop as low as they need t further abridge the rights of the citizens of the United States.

The so-called “gun show loophole” is another fabrication of the gun grabbers who invented this issue to help them to criminalize the private sale of a gun, and the giving of a firearm as a gift.  At gun shows, all dealers are required to perform a background check on all potential buyers, just like they do with every other sale.  No loophole exists!  Because private individuals often trade or sell guns from their own collections while at a gun show, the anti-gun media willingly lumps these collectors and hobbiests in with actual dealers when they try to validate their lie.

Some of the lies from Lautenberg’s website:

A loophole in current law allows people to purchase guns from unlicensed dealers at gun shows without going through a background check. The ATF reports that between 25 to 50 percent of firearm vendors at gun shows are unlicensed.

There are not any unlicensed dealers at gun shows.  All firearms dealers must be licensed, and those that are not are arrested and charged with federal crimes.  The 25-50% number is a complete fabrication.  If the 25-50% number were accurate, the BATFE would raid every gun show and shut them down!

Let me perfectly clear:

  1. All dealers at gun shows are licensed by the BATFE;
  2. All dealer transactions at gun shows must adhere to the same laws regarding all aspects of the transaction, just like they were at their store;
  3. Anyone dealing in firearms without a license would be arrested by the BATFE; and
  4. Senator Frank Lautenberg is a liar.

I’ll have more on this bill as soon as I can read through it and give you a better feel for it.  Keep in mind that with more than 10% of the Senate signed on as co-sponsors, and this is one of President Obama’s campaign promises, this bill may have some traction.

    I’m in NYS, where there is no Gun Show Loophole. Private Sales originating from a Gun show, or the parking lot, are already unlawful by state law. I’d say that the estimate of 25 to 50 percent of firearm vendors at gun shows are unlicensed would be pretty much accurate

    Accessories, Ammo, Reloading Supplies, Refinishing tools, Organization Tables (Clubs, Scope, NRA), BBQ Sauce, home improvement raffles, and lets not forget, Beef Jerkey!

      Thanks for stopping in Chris. I am guessing by 25-50% of unlicensed firearm vendors, you are referring to the people selling goods other than firearms? If so, then you are probably right on your percentage, but they are not firearms vendors. And that is the whole point: Lautenberg and his ilk lie about the statistics to create fear in people who don’t know any better.
