Steyr AUG with Trijicon TriPower Video

By Richard on October 26, 2009 2 Comments

Take a look at this video featuring the new Steyr AUG/A3 with a Trijicon TriPower optic.

The AUG/A3 is the civilian (read: semi-auto) version of the Steyr AUG combat rifle.  The AUG/A3 is a gas operated .223 Rem carbine with a 16″ barrel, yet, due to the bullpup design, it is only 28.25″ long overall.

The rifle ships with two 30 round magazines, soft carry case, factory AUG sling, and cleaning kit that fits conveniently in the butt stock.

The Steyr AUG/A3 has a picatinny rail for optics, like the Trijicon TriPower shown in the video.

The Trijicon TriPower features a reticle illuminated by three different means:  tritium, fiber optic, and battery.  This means that you should be able to put rounds on target in any circumstance.  It is a 1x scope, meaning no magnification.  Oh, and its waterproof to 100′.

The video was produced by the American Rifleman, a media publication of the NRA.

More Gen 4 Glock Information Coming

By Richard on October 23, 2009 No Comments

[Update 12/18/2009: Gen 4 Glock photo is here.]

More and more information about the Gen 4 Glocks (fourth generation) has been trickling in.  Based on what I am seeing and hearing, this is a significantly different Glock, not merely a refresh of the old design.

As I confirm the information, I will report it here.

Gun Dudes: A Podcast for the Masses

By Richard on October 22, 2009 No Comments

Do you have a group of guys that you sit around with, and talk guns, crack jokes, and quote action movies?  If so, you’ll feel right at home with the Gun Dudes podcast.

A lighthearted, actually fun approach to discussing firearms, the Gun Dudes are a group of guys that cover topics from concealed carry to IDPA shooting with a liberal helping of humor thrown in to keep the conversation interesting.

While each show will have some specific topics (also known as toe-picks), the Dudes also start each program with a bit of news that highlights citizens using firearms to defend themselves and their families.  A regular segment, the Misfire Award, discusses a criminal act that stands out from the crowd due to its over-achieving level of stupidity.

The Gun Dudes podcast is a member of the Gun Rights Radio Network (GRRN), which includes a wide range of gun and shooting related podcasts.

The Gun Dudes are Carl, (Tactical) Tom, and Stan with frequent guests dropping in to add to the conversation.  Though we have never met, listening to these guys is like sitting around with my own friends.  It is a great program, and I highly recommend it.

Carl was kind enough to answer a few questions via e-mail about the program:

GHG: How did the Gun Dudes come into being?  Why start a podcast?

Carl: I listen to around 45 to 50 different podcasts about a wide range of topics. From technology, and reading, to games, and sports. Because I am a UPS driver I am by myself 10 to 11 hours of the day and my route has only 1 business, so I NEED to be entertained. (us little fellas get lonely by ourselves, and my route is next to a mountain. No radio reception.)

At the time I was hearing nothing but negative from nearly all radio shows and I had not heard of the GRRN yet, so I started trying to find a lighthearted show that would make me laugh or at least entertain me but still talk about guns. I know the negative stuff is important because it keeps us aware, but it wears you out after a few episodes. I wasn’t able to find a show like that so I went to Tom and Stan (who are also UPS drivers, and friends), and explained my idea. I figured it would work because the way we talk to each other in real life is very similar to the way we talk on the show. (we tone it down for the show… no kidding). We love to mock one another, and poke fun. We love to quote movie and show lines to each other to see if the others can guess the show, ect…I wanted to hear a show about guns where the people made me remember how much fun shooting is. The competition with each other, the down talk about the others guns. Talk to me like my friends do.

I convinced them to try it out for 5 episodes and see how it went. They were great. Tom and Stan really do have great wits and I think all our personallities mesh well together. We had so much fun even though we sucked and know nothing about computers or radio and the feedback has (almost) always been great. We don’t make any money from the podcast and we don’t really care if we ever do, because the show has become our hobby.

GHG: What are the goals of the Gun Dudes podcast?

Carl: I guess our goal is to remind others to have fun. Negative talk wears people out. I think it makes their minds tired. We wanted to be a “break” for them. Yet still keep them up on why its important (the News) the stupid criminals (Misfire Awards) and keep it light.

Our honest feeling is, if someone else put out a better show and everyone else told us to quit, we would. Because then we could listen to their show while we drive our UPS trucks. Thats why we love to mention other podcasts that we listen to. They are better than us and they inform us. Especially the ones from the GRRN. They really are the shows we listen to, along with a few others. We are very simple people. We just want to be entertained while we work.

GHG: Where do you see the podcast going?

Carl: We put ourselves on itunes in the video games and hobbies section for a reason. There are a ton of young gamers that play games with guns and they know all about the best guns to have and how to equip them, but they have never seen one. Or they are told guns are evil and “a gun will kill”. We hope they will find our podcast and be entertained enough to listen to why we love our guns, and why we need them sometimes for protection. Also we hope to make them spray cola out their nose sometimes. We do that to each other in the UPS break room, why not to them as well.

If we go no further than that, I don’t think we did too bad. Anything further than that we don’t know. We just want to “do something” to help our hobby survive.

Fourth Generation Glock: Adjustable Grips

By Richard on October 21, 2009 20 Comments

glock_4thgen_01a

[Update 12/18/2009: Gen 4 Glock photo is here.]

Glock has officially started teasing to the fourth generation of their pistols due in 2010.

Calling it the “Next Generation of Perfection,” the fourth generation Glock pistols are expected to feature an interchangeable backstrap, or adjustable grip, to accommodate a wide range of hand sizes.

Way back on June 9, I broke the information on the adjustable grip Glock after a Glock rep leaked the information to police supplier, GT Distributors at the National Association of Police Equipment Distributors (NAPED) conference.

The fourth generation Glocks are rumored to have a textured finish that is not nearly as aggressive as the RTF2 introduced at the 2009 SHOT Show.  The new finish is said to be rougher than the prior generations, but easier on the hands and clothes than the RTF2.  The RTF2 was found by some people to wear through uniform shirts and other clothing too quickly.

While adjustable grip pistols are not new, Glock has resisted adding this feature to its guns.  However, with the significant gains Smith & Wesson has made into the police market with the M&P pistols, Glock is likely feeling the pressure to add interchangeable backstraps to better appeal to the law enforcement market.  Many agencies switching to the M&P have stated that the ability to match the gun to the officer’s hand size was a major factor in choosing Smith & Wesson over Glock.

The Gen 4 Glocks will be seen at the 2010 SHOT Show, and we will be there for full coverage.

US Palm AK30 Magazine

By Richard on October 21, 2009 No Comments

palm_ak30_01aUS Palm is introducing the AK30 magazine, a polymer AK-47 magazine completely manufactured in the USA.

The 30-round AK-47 magazine uses the polymers developed by Tango Down.  The AK30 magazine also borrows heavily from the design features of the Tango Down AR-15 magazine, including the non-removable floor plate for increased strength, the anti-tilt follower, chromium-silicon spring, and the large waffle-pattern texture on the magazine for a sure grip.

US Palm states the life expectancy on the AK30 magazine is in excess of 100,000 cycles.

Even though the magazine cannot be disassembled, it is still easy to clean due to the vented follower.  US Palm recommends immersing the magazine in soapy water to clean, then rinse and turn it upside down to drain.

MSRP is $29.95.

Specifications:

  • Caliber: 7.62x39mm
  • Capacity: 30 rounds
  • Material: Proprietary Polymer
  • Weight: 7.0 ounces
  • Overall Length: 9″
  • Overall Width: 1 3/16″

From US Palm:

This new 30 round magazine fits all AK?47 rifles that use detachable double?stack magazines. The AK30 is constructed of proprietary aerospace polymers developed by TangoDown. The AK30 sets itself apart from other polymer magazines with its purpose?built design and multiple unique features.

We took input from numerous industry professionals; real world operators, military and police active duty personnel, firearms instructors, manufacturing experts, and polymer industry chemists. We did our research to ensure this magazine would be the best from day one.

By eliminating the removable floor plate we created a stronger design; a five?sided box. This revolutionary design,
paired with advanced polymers gives the AK30 the strength it needs to survive impacts that would destroy other
magazines. After the magazine is molded, the body and end?cap are bonded together at the molecular level, so no
disassembly is possible or required.

The AK30 has a unique low?friction semi?floating follower that is slotted to allow for easy magazine cleaning and hassle?free maintenance. Just dunk the magazine in hot soapy water, rinse
and invert to drain. Dry contamination easily flows free through the vented follower design.  The AK30 also
features a chromium?silicon spring that is heat treated, stress relieved and features a US Mil?Spec coating. Life
expectancy for this spring is 100,000+ cycles.

Inside, there is a lot going on! The feed lips and locking surfaces are reinforced by a stainless steel cage that has
been molded into the entire top of the magazine to further ensure reliability for years of trouble free service.
Outside, our design team created a magazine that can be utilized by an operator in any condition. The aggressive
ridges on the front and rear allow a positive purchase when seating the AK30 into the rifle. The deep waffle
pattern on the magazine’s sides assist in rapid extraction from magazine pouches, and 100% positive manipulation
within conditions beyond extreme. Every surface of the AK30 was given careful consideration to benefit the
operator working in the world’s harshest conditions.

CMMG Gas Piston Conversion Kit for AR-15 Platform Guns

By Richard on October 17, 2009 No Comments

cmmg_gas_piston_01aGas piston AR-platform guns are all the rage right now.  Many manufacturers, such as Ruger (with the SR-556), are already in the piston market, with others right behind.  But, buying one of these rifles means laying out $1000 or more.

A less expensive alternative exists if you already own a AR-15: a CMMG conversion kit.  At only $299.99 from Brownells, you can turn your rifle into a gas piston system.

Brownells claims the rifle will “run cooler, cleaner, [and] smoother for improved function, reduced recoil, and less frequent cleaning.”

The CMMG kit allows the user to tune the system to work with all sorts of ammunition, including a suppressor or even .22 LR if you have a rimfire conversion kit.

From Brownells:

Drop-in conversion kit contains everything needed to replace the standard gas system on a AR-15/M16/M4 carbine with a reliable, positive cycling direct impingement gas piston system. Updates AR to the type of operating system used on advanced weapons like the FN SCAR, Heckler & Koch G36, and HK416, as well as the highly reliable, classic FAL and AK-series rifles.

Makes weapon run cooler, smoother, and more reliably, with less wear and easier maintenance. Because the gas no longer vents inside the receiver, fouling and carbon buildup are greatly reduced, requiring less frequent disassembly of the receiver for cleaning. Less fouling and lower operating temperatures mean substantially reduced wear on bolt, carrier, and receiver interior for fewer malfunctions caused by worn parts.

Piston’s cushioning effect reduces felt recoil to help you stay on target for better control during rapid fire and fast, accurate follow-up shots.

“Straight-line” design of the replacement gas block further ensures reliable operation by venting gas pressure directly on the operating rod. Rod transmits the force directly to a lug on the top side of the one-piece bolt carrier redesigned specifically to work with the piston system.

Carrier is machined from a solid billet of steel with an integral impingement lug to eliminate breakage that can occur with a standard carrier modified for use with a gas piston system.

A knob on the gas block allows gas flow to be shut off to allow use of a suppressor or a .22 LR conversion kit.

Kit may be installed on semi-auto and burst/full-auto rifles, as well as ARs chambered in non-standard calibers, including 6.8 SPC and 5.45 x 39. Requires no permanent alterations to barrel or upper receiver; remove piston system any time and reinstall the original parts.

SPECS:

  • Piston Tube, Bolt, Bolt Carrier, Handguard Retainer Cap – Steel, black oxide finish
  • Piston – Steel, hard-chromed
  • Gas Block – Aluminum, hardcoat anodized, matte black
  • Handguard – Reinforced polymer composite, black

KIT CONTAINS:

  • preassembled piston assembly
  • gas block
  • bolt
  • bolt carrier
  • handguard
  • handguard retainer
  • mounting hardware
  • installation instructions.

Fits semi-auto and burst/full-auto rifles with carbine-length gas system and .750” O.D. barrel. Gunsmith installation recommended.
