Ruger SR40 Coming Soon?

By Richard on May 27, 2010 1 Comments

Is Ruger set to announce the SR40 pistol?  Maybe.

During the past several years, Ruger has become one of the more popular firearms manufacturers by introducing products consumers want and shipping them on time.  In fact, Ruger has a solid policy of only announcing a product they are ready to ship.  Keeping with that policy, Ruger would only announce a new .40-caliber pistol when they were ready to get them into the dealers’ showrooms.

Ever since the introduction of the SR9 almost two years ago, people have asked about a .40 S&W version.  The Internet hopeful have even named the pistol the “SR40″.

2010 Hodgdon Annual Manual Correction

By Richard on May 27, 2010 No Comments

It looks like there was a printing error in the 2010 Hodgdon Annual Manual, causing several pages (108 and 109) to be reversed.  Hodgdon is advising not to use the 7mm data until you contact them for a manual update.

Gerber 06 Auto G10 Tanto Knife

By Aaron on May 26, 2010 No Comments

gerber_auto_tantoWith the release of the 06 Auto G10 Tanto, Gerber continues to advance the art of fine knife design and manufacturing.  I got to handle a G10 Tanto at the 2010 SHOT SHOW in Vegas and I found it to be a really fun knife.

Improving on the already popular 06 Auto knives, Gerber made the new series even more light-weight by using the G-10 handle.  That handle is made of hard anodized 6061-T6 machined aluminum.

The 06 Auto G10 has a S30V black oxide coated stainless steel blade, which is reported to increase edge retention while providing for corrosion resistance.  This blade is just under 4 inches long and has a partially serrated edge and Tanto-style tip.  The overall length of the knife when the blade is extended is about 8.5″ and with the lightweight material this knife is only 6.3 oz.

Winchester White Box Ammo Sucks: A Review

By Richard on May 25, 2010 27 Comments

winchester_white_box1Winchester “White Box” ammo (aka: WWB) sucks.  Maybe it is just me, but I don’t think so.  Reading some of the threads on some of the gun forums makes me think I’m not alone on this.

WWB is an inexpensive line of ammunition that tends to be popular because it is frequently cheaper than other factory ammo at WalMart and other stores.  I’ve purchased a few of the WWB 100-round bulk packs of 9mm in the past, but no more.

The WWB 9mm load is a 115 grain FMJ bullet loaded to standard pressures.  I’ve measured it from 1050-1125 fps (approximately) across a Chrony Beta chronograph.  So it seems pretty normal.

The problem is it induces malfunctions in everything!

TAPCO Intrafuse AR Handguard

By Aaron on May 25, 2010 No Comments

TAPCO AR HandguardTAPCO produces a fine alternative to the traditional aluminum quad-rail that many AR-15 owners consider as standard equipment today: the TAPCO Intrafuse AR Handguard

The TAPCO handguard is made of high strength composite and has full-length Picatinny rails on the top and bottom with half-length Picatinny rails on both sides to create the quad-rail. The bottom and side rails have detachable covers, while the top rail remains open at all times.

The covers are made of Santoprene, described as a high strength flexible rubber material, and are designed to be modular to fit the shooter’s desires. The covers can be removed in a matter of seconds, and do not require any tools to do so.

The M4 Mission Statement

By Richard on May 24, 2010 1 Comments

I guess everything has to have a mission statement.  According to the U.S. Army, this is the M4′s mission statement:

Deter, and if necessary, repel adversaries by enabling individuals and small units to engage targets with accurate, lethal, direct fire.

Goin’ to the Range

By Richard on May 24, 2010 No Comments

I’ve got a big day of testing planned at the range this morning.  On the plate:

  • testing of the Taurus 709 Slim pistol
  • more testing of the BLACKHAWK! Knoxx stock on a Remington 870 shotgun
  • testing of the Tactical Magwell on an AR15
  • chrony-time for some defensive loads in a variety of pistols

Another “5.56 NATO Bad” Article?

By Richard on May 23, 2010 4 Comments

The debate over the effectiveness of the 5.56 NATO cartridge has raged for decades, and the current war in Afghanistan hasn’t changed things.  Critics of the 5.56 generally bemoan the lack of “stopping power” and poor long range performance as compared to other rounds like the 7.62×51 (aka .308 Win).

In a Marine Corps Times article (taken from the AP), the debate continues.  The article highlights the superior performance of the 7.62 at long ranges in the Afghan mountains (300+ meters).  In fact, the author talks about the Afghanis using .303 Enfields and old Mausers to whip the Soviets in the 80′s.  I hope follow-up articles don’t suggest equipping out troops with Mosin-Nagant rifles to bridge the “surplus rifle gap.”

Army Approves Painting the M4, M16

By Richard on May 23, 2010 No Comments

m4_paint_01aThe U.S. Army officially approved the practice of painting the M4/M16 rifle, and issued a “how-to” manual.  Some deployed troops and units have been painting their rifles anyway, and the Army move legitimizes the practice.  However, soldiers still need permission from the unit commander before applying a camouflage paint scheme to their weapon.

An abbreviated “how-to” manual is here, while the full story can be read at the U.S. Army homepage.
