Smith & Wesson is now offering the SD9 and SD40 pistols, polymer pistols designated for self-defense. The SD9 is chambered for the 9mm cartridge, while the SD40 is chambered for the .40 S&W.
The SD9 and SD40 bear a striking resemblance to the Sigma line of pistols. If I had to guess, I’d say the SD pistols are Sigma pistols with a (mostly) visual refreshing.
The SD9 is a striker-fired pistol that holds 16 rounds in the magazine. The barrel length is 4″. The front sight is a Tritium night sight with a fixed steel, two-dot rear. A Picatinny-style rail is standard.
The SD40 shares the same dimensions and sights. The SD40 holds 14+1 cartridges.
The triggers on the Smith & Wesson pistols are designated “SDT,” which stands for Self Defense Trigger. S&W states the trigger offers a “optimal, consistent pull first round to last.”
The SD9 and SD40 have “aggressive front and back strap texturing.”
Retail is $530.00 on both pistols.
Ed. note: I posted a Smith & Wesson SD40 review that takes a detailed look at this new pistol. It is a lot better than I originally thought, and has a street price of less than $400! I bought the sample S&W sent me for review because I liked it that much!

It’s not like the Sigma. The angle of the grip is different. It looks better. It feels great in the hand and automatically lines up perfectly. The trigger pull is nice and smooth as well as consistent. Not too heavy, not too light for most shooters. It’s a must have!!
you have to shoot one of these guns i got the sd 9 for $350 new its as good as the mp 9 to me . very well made gun thank you s&w keep up the good work..
I am curious but not too optimistic. On the other hand I just bought an M&P 9mm and love that gun. My Sigma was crap…still is.
I bought the SD9 and have to say I love it.I had the Sigma when it first came out.(crap) The SD9 came out of the box shooting straight with a smooth trigger. I would give the gun a A- ( A or A+ being a M&P and alot more $.)
Man I love this pistol, smooth trigger. great sights, precise, comfortable to carry and shoot. I’ve shot 360 rounds of various brands without one jam. I bought it brand new and paid $455 for the gun, safety kit, lock box. two clips and rail light. You can’t beat the value for this price.
