Massad Ayoob – In The Gravest Extreme

By Richard on September 27, 2010 No Comments

“Massad Ayoob,” I said.

“Who?” my friend asked.

I was recently talking with a friend of mine who is getting into firearms for self defense. As things typically go when someone knows I am a cop, they will start asking me for all sorts of advice on when and how to use a gun for repelling felons. My answer is pretty standard: Massad Ayoob.

For those that don’t know, Mas has been researching, writing, and teaching on the topic of firearms in self defense for more than 30 years. One of his first mainstream publications is In the Gravest Extreme, which is a book every person who has considered carrying a firearm should read.

If you haven’t read the book, please stop everything and go get yourself a copy immediately. Heck, if I know you, I’ll loan you mine.

Smith & Wesson SD40 Review Soon

Smith & Wesson SD40 review

The new Smith & Wesson SD40 pistol.

The new Smith & Wesson SD40 is now in my hands, and I’m getting ready to get it to the range this week for a thorough testing and review.  First impression:  very nice.  The SD40 has a good feel in the hand, and while inexpensive, it does not feel cheap.

Update:  The full review of the S&W SD40 is up and posted.  Please take the time to read my review.  I was very impressed by the SD40, and I think it is one of the best values in handguns on the market today.  It was very reliable and was pretty darn accurate.

Overall, was very impressed by the new Smith & Wesson handgun.  But, check the review for all of the details on this fine pistol.

Hi Viz Front Sight for Ruger LCR

By Richard on September 10, 2010 2 Comments

Want a replacement front sight for your Ruger LCR?  Hi Viz has a solution.

Hi Viz is now offering a fiber optic front sight for the Ruger revolver.  Available in red or green, the sight is resin overmolded and pre-drilled for easy installation.  Also, replacement roll pin is included in the package.

Hi Viz calls their fiber optic sight a “LitePipe,” and my experience is they are very bright and easy to see.  So, if you are in the market for a new front sight on your LCR, give Hi Viz a look.

The Real Cost of Green Lasers?

By Richard on September 9, 2010 No Comments

Crimson Trace is now offering Interchangeable Laser Modules in red and green for the MVF-515 series light and laser foregrips for AR-type rifles.  Green lasers are notoriously more expensive, and many people have questioned the higher prices charged for them.  I may have discovered the answer on the Crimson Trace web site:

Truth be known, I like Crimson Trace.  They make quality products, and I do not believe they are trying to gouge their customers on green lasers.  But, it is a funny typo…

Chiappa Rhino Video

By Richard on September 9, 2010 No Comments

This video is of the 2″ Chippa Rhino revolver chambered in .357 Magnum being fired.  The lack of muzzle flip is pretty impressive, as is the fireball that a short barrel .357 Magnum can make.

The load was the .357 Magnum Federal Classic 125 grain JHP.  Watch the target video in the upper left corner as it is fired.  Combat accuracy/speed appears to be very good.

More information on the Chiappa Rhino to follow.

Ruger Mini-30 Tactical

By Richard on September 8, 2010 3 Comments

Ruger announced the new Mini Thirty Tactical rifle today.  Chambered in the 7.62×39 cartridge, the new Mini-30 has a 16 1/8″ barrel, synthetic stock, ghost ring sights, and flash suppressor.  The Tactical ships with one 20-round magazine.

Ruger machined scope bases into the receiver, and includes a set of scope rings.

Compared to the standard Mini Thirty, the Tactical has a barrel that is almost 2.5″ shorter.  Additionally, the barrel and receiver are a blued alloy steel instead of a matte stainless steel.  The ‘standard’ Mini Thirty rifles don’t have the flash suppressors that the Tactical does.

MSRP for the new Mini Thirty Tactical is $921, which is less than the $949-966 price tags on the other Mini Thirty variants.

And no, it is not California legal.

Thunder Forward Grip from EMA Tactical

By Richard on September 8, 2010 No Comments

EMA Tactical announced a new line of fore grips for AR-style rifles: the Thunder Forward Grips.

Currently there are two grips in the new EMA line, the full-sized TVG1 and the ‘shorty’ TVG. The shorter TVG allows the shooter to wrap three fingers around it, while providing a lower-profile appearance. The full-size TVG1 allows all four fingers to wrap around the grip, allowing greater control.

Both grips offer a sealed storage compartment, and EMA is rolling out the Thunder Forward Grips in black, tan, and OD green. The grips have a lifetime warranty. MSRP is $14.95 each.

22 Round Glock .40 Magazines

By Richard on September 6, 2010 No Comments

Glock is now shipping 22 round magazines for their .40 S&W pistols. The new magazines are said to have been developed for the US Special Operations forces, and there was such demand that they are now producing them as a commercial item.

The magazine extends past the bottom of the frame on the full-size Glock 22, similar to the 33 round Glock 18 magazines.

Make sure you check out our behind-the-scenes look at Delta Force and the Glock pistols.

Gen 4 Glock 37 For Sale in September

By Richard on September 3, 2010 4 Comments

The Gen 4 Glock 37 should be ready for sale in September according to industry sources.  The model 37 is the latest in the Glock line to receive the Gen 4 treatment that includes, among other things, and adjustable size grip.  Other Gen 4 Glock pistols already for sale or announced are the 17, 19, 22, 23, and 31.

The model 37 is chambered in .45 GAP, and has already been shipped to the troopers of the Florida Highway Patrol.  In January, at the 2010 SHOT Show, Randy Pitts, a Glock district manager, described the FHP pistols to me.  At that time, FHP was the only agency receiving the pistol and Pitts was unsure if the Gen 4 Glock 37 would be released to the public.

A full article on the Gen 4 Glock 37 sold to the Florida Highway Patrol is at the BlueSheepdog.com.
