There were some interesting tidbits of information in “Firearms Commerce in the United States 2011” published recently by the ATF.
Manufacturing – There are 5400 licensed firearms manufacturers in the United States. Going through my web browser’s bookmarks, I clearly have only a small fraction of that number on my radar.
It stands to reason that if the USA is built on small business, so is the firearms industry. While not everyone is a Remington, Ruger or Smith & Wesson, a manufacturer doesn’t need to be massive to be profitable. There are a lot of small manufacturers that are building custom rifles, race guns and other niche firearms. Thousands of them, actually.
CCI is bringing out a new .22 LR cartridge called the Quiet-22. The new rimfire round will be a low velocity round designed specifically to produce less noise when compared to a standard velocity 22 LR cartridge. CCI claims a 75% reduction in noise.
The Quiet-22 uses a 40 grain round nose bullet and creeps along at only 710 fps. This cartridge will function perfectly fine in any single shot or bolt action gun. According to CCI, the round will also perform well in semi-auto firearms, though manual cycling may be required due to the low velocity.
So, why would anyone want a really slow, really quiet .22 LR cartridge? I can think of a couple of reasons. You may think of more.

An PJ Holster kydex scabbard for the Beretta Nano.
“Where can I find a Beretta Nano holster?” is one of the more popular questions I have gotten via e-mail in the past few weeks. The Beretta Nano is a subcompact pistol introduced recently and it is now shipping. Perfect for concealed carry, the Nano owner needs a quality holster.
Fortunately, several holster makers are already stepping up to provide leather and polymer solutions to your CCW needs. I have assembled a small list of Nano holsters that I know exist currently. If you are aware of others, please sound off in the comments section.
High Noon Holsters – High Noon Holsters is offering many of their leather designs fitted for the Beretta Nano. Holster models for the Nano include Bare Asset, Mr. Softy, Back Skin, Swift Skin, Skin Deep, Bare Skin, Skin Guard, Centerfold and Split Decision. These holsters cover a wide range of styles including several inside-the-waistband (IWB) rigs and numerous outside-the-waistband (OWB) scabbards.

Here are a few reviews and news items on guns and other gear from around the web:
Cold Steel Voyager review – Excellent review on this line of knives over at BladeReviews.com. The article includes a lot of details, a video and photos.
Details of Shooting on Shatt al-Arab – Reports filed by security contractors in Iraq regarding waterfront/river-borne threats and their use-of-force to end them.
Anyone get anything cool for Christmas? A case of ammo or a shiny new pistol? I’m always a sucker for a surplus rifle covered in cosmoline.
