Cabot Guns South Paw

By Richard on January 31, 2012 2 Comments

In case you missed it previously, Cabot Guns is building a left-hand oriented 1911 pistol called the South Paw.  The South Paw was introduced at the 2012 SHOT Show.

Cabot claims the South Paw is the only left-handed 1911 pistol on the market, and I believe they are right.  Left-handed firearms are often produced in limited numbers in the rifle community, but are even less common in handguns.  Typically, gun companies will offer ambidextrous or reversible features (safeties, mag releases), but not a straight lefty.

The Charter Arms Southpaw, a left-handed .38 Special revolver, is another example of a left-handed handgun.

According to Cabot Guns, the South Paw is a precision handgun machined to “extreme tolerances.”  The price? $5250.

Upgraded Bersa Thunder HC Pro

By Richard on January 31, 2012 1 Comments

Eagle Imports announced the importation of a “new and improved” Bersa Thunder HC Pro.  The HC, or High Capacity, pistols are “full size” or duty-type pistols, not the smaller Bersa Thunder .380 ACP pistols for which many people know the company.

SIG P238 Scorpion – Ambidextrous Safety

By Richard on January 30, 2012 2 Comments

As previously reported, SIG SAUER is now making the P238 with an ambidextrous safety.  I photographed the P238 Scorpion at the 2012 SHOT Show that has the updated safety.

SIG P224Want to win a SIG P224?  SIG SAUER is running a giveaway on their Facebook page that will allow some lucky shooter to pick up one of these new handguns.

We’ve had a chance to handle the SIG P224, and it is a very nice addition to the Classic SIG line.  Click here to read Randall’s SIG P224 Review from Media Day.

SIG P224 Review

By Randy on January 28, 2012 10 Comments

Ed. note: This SIG P224 review is from the Media Day at the Range at the 2012 SHOT Show.  Two of our writers, Aaron and Randall, got to spend some time shooting and evaluating the new SIG SAUER pistol.

As Aaron and I wandered down the long dusty row of vendors at 2012 SHOT Show Media Day at the Range, we spied the blue and white Sig Sauer banner. We ducked into a line of writers and fairly giggled to each other, “P224!”

I have wanted to shoot one of these since they were announced. Richard has written some previous articles on the compact SIG P224, so I won’t retrace his steps…

SIG P224 Review

We waited quite some time to reach the front of the line, but it was worth it. I have carried a .40 cal. Sig Sauer P226 or P226R for well over a decade, so I am somewhat familiar with Sig’s work.

Gerber Swagger Knife Review

By Richard on January 27, 2012 1 Comments

(This article is a review of the Gerber Swagger knife.  The specific model reviewed is the partially-serrated version, but a fine edge version of the Swagger is also available from Gerber.  Please add your own experiences with this knife in the comments at the end of this review.)

At a Christmas party I got a Gerber Swagger knife during a gift exchange. I’ll take a knife as a gift anytime, and I have owned several Gerber knives so this was a welcomed addition.

Gerber Swagger Knife review

THE BLADE

This Gerber knife has a 3.2” blade according to the packaging, or 3.3” if you go to the Gerber website. That’s not the first time I’ve seen differences from packaging and websites. Measuring my blade it would appear that it’s closer to the 3.2” if I measure to the furthest extension of the grip, which extends out in the middle and tapers back to the sides. If I measure to the sides of the grip, behind the point on the blade, I could see the 3.3” measurement.

Bersa BP9CC

By Richard on January 27, 2012 4 Comments

The recently released Bersa BP9CC was on prominent display at the 2012 SHOT Show.  The BP9cc is a single-stack 9mm pistol imported into the US by Eagle Imports.  This was the first chance I had to actually put hands on one, and I was very impressed.

Bersa BP9cc

The pistol felt very good in the hand: thin, but not so small my hands were searching for purchase.  For concealed carry, I think a medium-sized, single-stack 9mm pistol is a very good choice for balancing ease of carry and stopping power.  Less than an inch thick, but still holding 8+1 rounds with a 3.3″ barrel makes the Bersa a very nice compromise for CCW.

The trigger felt very nice when I dry fired the pistol at the Eagle Imports booth.  The trigger didn’t seem to stack or stage – just a smooth, consistant pull straight back.

CZ P-07 Duty in OD Green

By Richard on January 27, 2012 No Comments

Last November, I reported that CZ would introduce a new P-07 Duty pistol with an OD green frame.  They were showing the new pistol at the 2012 SHOT Show.

CZ P-07 Duty OD Green

The rep I spoke with was not sure on MSRP, but believed the OD frame gun would be “…about the same price…” as the black framed pistol.  This squares with the previously reported information that the OD pistol would be only $6 more than the black one.

Shipping on the OD P-07 Duty pistols should be later this year.

CMMG Revolution and M300 Rifles

By Aaron on January 26, 2012 No Comments

CMMG announced several new products at the 2012 SHOT Show.  Aaron caught up with them and took a look at the new CMMG Revolution and CMMG M300 rifles.

Being from Missouri I had to stop by and check out the latest from CMMG.  At the CMMG booth, I talked with Larry Wayland who sells their rifles through his retail store, and works closely with the CMMG staff.

The explosion of the .300 Blackout cartridge focused my attention to the CMMG M300, but while there Larry also showed me a very interesting new development that CMMG has been playing with. It’s called the Revolution model upper receiver and hand guard. This is an innovative AR-platform concept and CMMG has the patents. In addition to the .300 Blackout rifles coming out, the Revolution system is offered on their standard 5.56mm rifles as well.

REVOLUTION UPPERS

This new creation from CMMG allows for an ambidextrous upper receiver. Not in the traditional sense, but instead the receiver is milled to allow the same receiver to service a right-handed or a left-handed shooter. This innovation cuts an ejection port on both sides of the receiver. So the selected shooting configuration (right/left handed) has a bolt-on plate containing the ejection port and forward assist knob. The other side of the receiver has a bolted on plate covering that ejection port.
