ATI – GSG STG-44 Carbine

By Richard on January 12, 2012 3 Comments

American Tactical Imports (ATI) will be showing the new Sturmgewehr STG-44 clone made by German Sport Guns (GSG).  The STG-44 clone is chambered in .22 LR and is semi-automatic, but is otherwise a very close representation of the original World War II gun and grandpappy to the modern assault rifle.

The GSG STG-44 will come with either 10 or 25 round magazines.  Furniture is real wood.  We will definitely have more photos of this gun from the 2012 SHOT Show.

From ATI:

The German Sport Guns .22LR STG-44 is the newest addition to the exciting line of GSG firearms. Designed to precisely imitate the WWII Sturmgewehr, the GSG STG-44 features a weight of 9.5lbs, a 17” barrel, an overall length of 37” and real solid wood furniture. It is available with 10 or 25 round capacity magazines.

I’d like this a lot more, particularly for the price, if it were available in 7.92x33mm caliber, with locked breech, like the original. In .22 rimfire, I’m not so impressed.

Unrealistic expectation – just where would anyone get that now obsolete ammo? 7.62 X 39 would be far more marketable, but I suspect if no one’s done it in 68 years then it ain’t gonna happen, period. I’d rather know if it functions reliably, shoots well, & disassembles easily for cleaning without any stupid mechanical gymnastics. Few of these .22 ‘replicas’ are cheap nowadays. I’ve wanted a functional StG-44 (& the even rarer 45) for years.

You know, Nate, you make a good point. An STG-44 replica in 7.62×39 wound be a fun gun. Relatively affordable centerfire ammo of a power very similar to the original 7.92 cartridge. The 7.62×39 is slightly longer, but I’m sure the engineers could work it out. The more I think about it, the more I like it.
