The National Rifle Association (NRA) was organized in 1871 as a means to increase Americans marksmanship. The NRA has been producing the American Rifleman magazine since 1885, making the American Rifleman the longest continuous and oldest firearms publication in America.
Recently, the magazine reached another impressive milestone. With nearly 1 million new members to the NRA in the last decade, the American Rifleman has seen a rise of 29.3% in circulation. With a current average circulation of 2.2 million, the American Rifleman has entered the top 25 magazine publications by circulation in the nation, according to a report by the Advertising Age. The American Rifleman beat out Maxim to enter into the Top 25 magazine publications.
The article from Advertising Age also noted that magazines overall have seen a 1.7% decline in total paid and verified circulation. However, magazines also reported a 36.7% increase in digital magazine selections, confirming what many media outlets see as the inevitable transition from printed media to digital formats.
With a membership now totaling over 5 million members, the incredible growth of the NRA includes a 25% increase in membership last year alone. Each membership comes with the member’s choice of one magazine from the three NRA publications. The other two publications are American Hunter, and America’s 1st Freedom.
