Winchester White Box Ammo Sucks: A Review

By Richard on May 25, 2010 29 Comments

winchester_white_box1Winchester “White Box” ammo (aka: WWB) sucks.  Maybe it is just me, but I don’t think so.  Reading some of the threads on some of the gun forums makes me think I’m not alone on this.

WWB is an inexpensive line of ammunition that tends to be popular because it is frequently cheaper than other factory ammo at WalMart and other stores.  I’ve purchased a few of the WWB 100-round bulk packs of 9mm in the past, but no more.

The WWB 9mm load is a 115 grain FMJ bullet loaded to standard pressures.  I’ve measured it from 1050-1125 fps (approximately) across a Chrony Beta chronograph.  So it seems pretty normal.

The problem is it induces malfunctions in everything!

The M4 Mission Statement

By Richard on May 24, 2010 1 Comments

I guess everything has to have a mission statement.  According to the U.S. Army, this is the M4′s mission statement:

Deter, and if necessary, repel adversaries by enabling individuals and small units to engage targets with accurate, lethal, direct fire.

Goin’ to the Range

By Richard on May 24, 2010 No Comments

I’ve got a big day of testing planned at the range this morning.  On the plate:

  • testing of the Taurus 709 Slim pistol
  • more testing of the BLACKHAWK! Knoxx stock on a Remington 870 shotgun
  • testing of the Tactical Magwell on an AR15
  • chrony-time for some defensive loads in a variety of pistols

Another “5.56 NATO Bad” Article?

By Richard on May 23, 2010 4 Comments

The debate over the effectiveness of the 5.56 NATO cartridge has raged for decades, and the current war in Afghanistan hasn’t changed things.  Critics of the 5.56 generally bemoan the lack of “stopping power” and poor long range performance as compared to other rounds like the 7.62×51 (aka .308 Win).

In a Marine Corps Times article (taken from the AP), the debate continues.  The article highlights the superior performance of the 7.62 at long ranges in the Afghan mountains (300+ meters).  In fact, the author talks about the Afghanis using .303 Enfields and old Mausers to whip the Soviets in the 80′s.  I hope follow-up articles don’t suggest equipping out troops with Mosin-Nagant rifles to bridge the “surplus rifle gap.”

Army Approves Painting the M4, M16

By Richard on May 23, 2010 No Comments

m4_paint_01aThe U.S. Army officially approved the practice of painting the M4/M16 rifle, and issued a “how-to” manual.  Some deployed troops and units have been painting their rifles anyway, and the Army move legitimizes the practice.  However, soldiers still need permission from the unit commander before applying a camouflage paint scheme to their weapon.

An abbreviated “how-to” manual is here, while the full story can be read at the U.S. Army homepage.

Dry Fire Debate

By Richard on May 21, 2010 3 Comments

Reading Tam’s blog this morning, I discovered that there is still a largely overblown fear of damaging firearms by dry firing a handgun.  ‘Damaging guns by dry-fire’ seems to be the gun hobby’s version of ‘I woke up in a bathtub filled with ice-water and one of my kidneys was stolen.”  While it may be possible, it is highly improbable.

I’ve carried a gun professionally since 1995.  In 15 years, I have personally dry fired dozens of guns, including Glocks, Sigs, and Smith & Wessons – thousands of times each.

In every police academy and agency I have been associated with, firearms training included dry fire training, mostly without snap caps.  These academies and agencies have trained thousands of cops.

To date, I have not encountered a single officer, agency, or academy instructor who has experienced or seen first-hand any damage resulting to any modern handgun.  Although you should check your owner’s manual, I’m very comfortable with saying that modern pistols can be dry fired with little possibility of damage.

I have previously written about the benefits of dry firing on this site and at BlueSheepdog.

Keep in mind, I am talking about modern, defensive handguns.  If you have an H&H double rifle, that may be a completely different tale.

New Ruger SR-556C Carbine

By Richard on May 17, 2010 No Comments

ruger_sr556c_01aRuger showed off the new SR-556C carbine at last week’s 2010 NRA Meeting.  The SR-556C is similar to the original Ruger SR-556, but is shorter and lighter.  Like the original, the SR-556C is piston driven, and comes with a nice compliment of features and accessories, including a Troy Industries quad rail, Troy Industries folding sights, and three Magpul PMAG magazines.
