Walther PPX – More Details

I was able to give everyone a sneak peak at the Walther PPX back in November when I was at the 2012 NASGW Expo.  Now, Walther has officially pulled back the covers and is proudly showing their new duty-sized pistol.

Before we go any farther, I best address the obvious:  the gun’s look is polarizing.  Some people like it…others think it is an abomination.  Seeing it in person, well, it doesn’t look much better than the photos.  But, it does feel pretty good in the hand. At the end of the day, how it shoots is much more important than how it looks, right?  Who’s with me?

LaserLyte has a new training pistol:  the Trigger Tyme.  If you read the marketing materials on the training gun, it would seem to be an ideal tool, especially for Glock shooters.  But does it live up to that description?

Hornady 30 Carbine Ammo

Hornady .30 Carbine ammoShooters of a great old cartridge, the .30 carbine, are getting another choice in ammo with the introduction on the Hornady Critical Defense load.

The .30 carbine has been considered by many to be a step up from the power of a pistol, but that it is nowhere near the effectiveness of a true rifle cartridge for self defense.  A good ammo load can help overcome any perceived deficiencies in this cartridge.

New Blackhawk Products

Blackhawk GripBreak HolsterBlackhawk announced a slew of new products at the recent 2012 NASGW Expo.  I’ll run down a few of them for you here:

GripBreak leather holsters - The GripBreak leather holsters are concealment holsters with a thumb release mechanism.  The design of the holster allows for the shooter to obtain a shooting grip on the pistol while simultaneously deactivating the retention device.

The GripBreak is a complete departure from Blackhawk’s very popular SERPA line of holsters, which are made of polymer and use a retention device activated by the index finger.  Blackhawk has integrated a thumb release into several new holster designs, including the Epoch duty holster for law enforcement.

Heizer Defense vs DoubleTap Defense

Heizer Defense logo It looks like there is a storm brewing in one corner of the firearms industry. Let me explain…

I was sitting outside the main hall at the 2012 NASGW Expo working on an article when I was approached by a man asking if I was in the media. When I said “yes,” the man introduced himself as Jim Bruchas, the director of sales for Heizer Defense. The next few minutes reminded me that even in such a friendly industry as the gun business, feelings can get hurt and egos bruised.

Hornady’s New .32 H&R Magnum Critical Defense Load

Hornady .32 H&R Magnum Ammo

The Critical Defense .32 H&R Magnum is another self defense load announced by Hornady at the 2012 NASGW show last week.  Designed for any revolver chambered for the .32 H&R Magnum, the ammunition performs equally as well in .327 Federal Magnum revolvers also.

This load uses an 80 grain FTX bullet.  The FTX bullet is a polymer tipped hollowpoint that has proven to be very successful in both self defense and hunting applications.  A friend who uses the Hornady Leverevolution .30-30 ammo with an FTX bullet tells me the wound channel they create is unbelievable.  These rounds use the same bullet technology.

New Walther PPK: .22 LR and Suppressors

Walther is re-introducing the PPK chambered for the .22 LR into the United States, this time with the ability to add a suppressor.  Due to my poor timing and the crowd in the Walther booth, I did not get an opportunity to talk to one of the Walther reps about the gun in any detail.  When I get more, I will post it here on the site.
