Browning Black Label Shadowfax Knife

By Aaron on February 22, 2012 No Comments

Aaron got a chance to visit with Jared Wihongi and talk about the Browning Black Label Shadowfax knive at the 2012 SHOT Show in Las Vegas. – Ed.

Browning Black Label Shadowfax Knife

John M. Browning is best known for his firearms. He is perhaps the most influential firearms designer of all time. His incredible genius produced the Winchester Model 1897 pump action shotgun, and the Winchester Model 1886, 1887, 1894 and 1895 lever action repeating rifles. He also designed the Remington Model 11 semi-auto shotgun, the Colt Model 1911 .45 ACP pistol, and later M2 “Ma Deuce” .50 caliber machine gun, as well as, the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle), and the Browning Hi- Power Model P-35 9mm handgun. His namesake company has a storied past, present, and future in the firearms industry. It’s been about 40 years ago that the Browning Company began producing a nice line of hunting knives. During that time they’ve developed a good reputation for quality knives.

BROWNING BLACK LABEL KNIVES

Now Browning is venturing into the world of tactical knife making. The Black Label series of knives by Browning are meant to make a bold statement in a market that is rapidly becoming as tight and competitive as the most precision of firearms market. And the Black Label knives aim to jump into the fore front of this area of knife making with their very first.

CRKT Eat’n Tool

By Aaron on February 20, 2012 4 Comments

While investigating the new knives at the CRKT booth at SHOT SHOW I was shown a handy little item by the representative. Called the CRKT Eat’N Tool, this survival tool incorporates several of the necessary items for outdoor survival, into a nice compact frame that is easily carried in a pocket or attached to gear. The Eat’N Tool is apart of CRKT’s I.D. Works or Inspired Design.

CRKT Eat'N Tool

CRKT is, by far, known more for some of today’s most outstanding knife designs than any of their other designs. Founded in 1994 by Rod Bremmer, CRKT is located in Tualatin, Oregon which is a suburb southwest of Portland. Although Tualatin has a population of only about 26,000, it is the home to both CRKT, and Kershaw, another well known knife manufacturer. The area boasts some of the most beautiful hunting, fishing, camping, and mountaineering areas in the country, and I’m sure a constant inspiration for CRKT designs.

The Eat’N Tool has the following survival tools combined in one:

  • Fork/Spoon combination
  • Bottle opener
  • (3) Metric wrenches (6mm, 8mm, 10mm)
  • Standard screw driver/pry edge, and a
  • Attachment carabiner (non-weight bearing).

S&W M&P 15 VTAC II

By Aaron on February 15, 2012 No Comments

Smith & Wesson has been busy retaking the law enforcement and personal defense world with their M&P series that there weren’t too many new things to view at their booth this year. However, I did find the VTAC II M&P 15 and I thought I’d share it with you. Nothing earth shattering in design, but a nice combination.

S&W M&P15 VTAC Rifle

This is a standard semi-auto M&P15 .556 mm AR-15 style rifle with Viking Tactical (VTAC) furniture, which compliments the M&P 15 nicely. S&W made this a mid- length platform and claims that this will lower recoil and increase accuracy, along with higher 2nd shot hit probability.

Olympic Arms K16 300 SST IN .300 BLK

By Aaron on February 10, 2012 8 Comments

[Aaron caught up with Olympic Arms at the 2012 SHOT Show and took a look at their new K16 300 SST chambered for the 300 BLK cartridge.]

By now most readers will realize that there has been an explosion in rifle offerings in .300 Blackout (BLK). The .300 Blackout cartridge came about to fulfill the desires of shooters who wanted to shoot .30 caliber bullets, but didn’t want to lose the capacity and weight advantages of shooting traditional 5.56mm AR-15’s.

Olympic Arms 300 BLK

The .300 BLK is a very unique .30 caliber cartridge. Instead of bulking up the casing and powder weights to accommodate the .30 caliber bullet, the .300 BLK starts with the same 5.56mm casing that is the standard for AR-15 platforms. From there the casing is necked up, or expanded out at the neck, to accept the .30 caliber bullet. The rest of the casing is the same as the 5.56mm casing along with powder weights. The end result is a .30 caliber bullet fired from basically the same casing as the traditional 5.56mm cartridge.

Galco Double Time Holster

By Richard on February 10, 2012 1 Comments

Galco Double Time HolsterI had a chance to check out some of the new gear from Galco at the 2012 SHOT Show.  One of the things that I think will be a popular item for them this year is the Double Time holster.

The Galco Double Time holster is an open-top kydex holster that can be used as an inside-the-waistband (IWB) or an outside-the-waistband (OWB) belt holster depending on how you want to set it up.  The user can swap the holster between carry styles in just a couple of minutes using a screwdriver.

While I don’t expect someone to swap frequently, I can see the usefulness of this feature.  If you live in an area with warm summers and cold winters, wardrobe changes between the seasons could dictate different carry styles.  With one holster, you are covered.  Not a bad deal.

Caracal “Quick Sights” Photo

By Richard on February 3, 2012 1 Comments

Yesterday, I posted photos of the new Caracal pistols that were at the 2012 SHOT Show.  Ron from When the Balloon Goes Up! sent me a photo of the “quick sights” that Caracal is offering as an option on their pistols.

The “quick sights” look like they would be less accurate due to the short sight radius, yet I found them to be surprisingly fast.  For close in encounters typical of self defense shootings, these may be an advantage.

The rear sight in the Quick Sight System is moved forward of the ejection port, putting it in the same focal plane as the front sight. Photo courtesy of When the Balloon Goes Up!

New Stag Arms 3G

By Aaron on February 2, 2012 No Comments

Stag Arms had their new 3G model displayed at the 2012 SHOT Show. Available since October of last year, Stag specifically designed the 3G to excel at 3-gun competitions that require a variety of long range and short range shots.

Stag 3G rifle

THE NEW MODEL 3

Last year Stag introduced the New Model 3, which upgraded the first Model 3 from a simple “optics ready” (top rail) carbine, to an optics ready and accessory ready carbine. Stag included a Diamondhead V-RS modular rail system handguard to accomplish that improvement, but what surprised many was that Stag did not increase the price of the carbine with the upgraded handguard (a $109 value). The new model 3 remained available for only $895. Those versions were gas-impingement rifles, but with the upgraded handguard and inexpensive price, the new Model 3 remains a popular option with AR shooters.

Caracal Pistol Photos

By Richard on February 2, 2012 4 Comments

Caracal

The new Caracal pistols made a minor stir at the 2012 SHOT Show.  The guns felt good in the hand, and shot well at Media Day, but time will tell if they are as reliable as other polymer guns currently on the market.

Here are a few more photos of the guns from the Show:

Rock River LAR-47

By Aaron on February 1, 2012 7 Comments

Aaron got a close look at the Rock River LAR-47 at the 2012 SHOT Show.  Here are his thoughts on the rifle.

Rock River Arms (RRA) has become one of the hottest AR-15 rifle manufactures in the country. Brothers Mark and Chuck Larson founded the company in 1996, after spending about 15 years as armorers with Springfield Armory, Les Baer Custom, and Eagle Arms – where they worked on AR platforms.

The RRA LAR-15 rifles and 2-stage triggers have become synonymous with quality craftsmanship. It was that quality that led the DEA to award RRA a contract for patrol rifles back in 2003, beating out several of the “majors” rifles for the bid. That bid alone may have propelled RRA into the AR market spotlight at an early age when most weapon manufacturers are still trying to work out the bugs of their brand name. RRA has excelled at making excellent rifles, and the number of agencies and personal owners has increased accordingly.

Rock River LAR-47

Though they have experience building 1911 pistols, RRA has for years focused their attention solely on AR-15 rifle platforms.

That is until now!

At the 2012 SHOT SHOW Rock River Arms announced that in 2012 they will begin distribution of the RRA LAR-47 CAR A4 – a sweet combination of the AR-15 and AK-47 platforms that RRA calls “a match made in heaven”. I talked with RRA representative, Steve Mayer about this truly unique innovation in the rifle market.
