Olympic Arms Gamestalker Chambered in .300 OSSM

By Richard on January 20, 2010 3 Comments

olympic_gamemaster_01aOlympic Arms had their new Gamestalker rifle on display at the 2010 SHOT Show.  The Gamestalker is an AR-platform rifle chambered in .243 WSSM, .25 WSSM and the brand new .300 OSSM (see more information here.)

The Gamestalker features a 22″ barrel, free floating aluminum handguard, ACE skeleton stock and an ERGO “Fat Boy” grip.  The upper receiver has a flattop for easy installation of your choice in optics.  The rifle weighs 7.5 pounds and has a camouflage pattern.  It ships with one, seven-round magazine.

The rifle has a retail price of $1359, but expect street price around $1200-1300.

Olympic Arms staff state the rifles are in production now, but supplies will be limited initially due to the amount of time needed to properly apply the camouflage pattern.

The Gamestalker feels well balanced and solid.  According to one staff member who has taken it shooting, the recoil is less than a .30-06, and it is an easy gun to carry into the field.

If you are in the market for a North America big game hunting rifle, check out the Gamestalker.

New Cartridge: .300 Olympic Super Short Magnum

By Richard on January 20, 2010 No Comments

Olympic Arms introduced a new cartridge: the .300 Olympic Super Short Magnum.  According to Olympic Arms staff, the .300 OSSM is a .308 bullet in a shortened WSSM case that was designed to shoot out of a standard AR-15 platform.  The result?  A cartridge capable of taking any game on the North American continent that can be shot out of a handy, lightweight rifle.

Introduced in conjunction with the Gamestalker rifle (see additional information here), the .300 OSSM is specifically designed for big game hunting in North America.  The cartridge is capable of launching a 150 grain, .30 caliber bullet at more than 3040 fps from a 24″ barrel.  In a 22″ barrel, the same bullet is traveling at just under 3000 fps.

Currently, ammunition is available directly from Olympic Arms, but will soon be available from HSM, who helped develop the cartridge.  Three loads are available now:  110 grain V-MAX (at 3400 fps), a 150 grain Speer Grand Slam (at more than 3000 fps) and a 150 grain Sierra boattail (at more than 3000 fps.)

Hornady is already making dies for the .300 OSSM, so handloaders will be able to get to work immediately with this load.

Remington RF-05 Hunting Boots

By Richard on December 15, 2009 No Comments

remington_rf5_03aNeed a pair of hunting boots?  Take a look at this review of the Remington RF-05 hunting boots.  These Remington boots are an all-purpose 8″ leather hunting boot. The RF-05 has a Max-Dri waterproof liner, making these boots a good choice in all weather conditions.

Radians, who manufactures these boots under license, sent me a pair of  these boots for review.  When I first pulled this pair of boots out of the box, I was immediately impressed by the look and style of them. The leather has a rich brown color, and a pleasant feel.

The boots were comfortable to put on, and sized correctly.  I wear a 10 1/2, and these fit exactly right.  With a thicker winter sock, I would suggest looking at a 1/2 size larger boot.

remington_rf5_02aThe laces seem a little thinner than other boot laces, but they seemed strong enough for regular use in the field.  The upper part of the boots had speed lace loops, allowing for easy lacing up and removing of the boots.

Wearing the boots in the field, I found them to be comfortable with very little break in needed.  The soles gave very good support.

Additionally, the ankle support was excellent.  I have the awful tendency to ‘roll’ my ankles.  These Remington RF-05 boots fully supported my ankles, and I had no problems while wearing these in the woods.

The waterproof liner worked as advertised.  I found a few puddles to stand in, and the water never got to my feet.  If you have ever been in the field with wet feet, you know how miserable that can quickly become.  I never wear any boots into the woods that are not waterproof for that reason.

Overall, I really liked these boots.  They look good and are comfortable to wear.  As a general purpose hunting or field boot, I think they are worth a look.  The suggested retail price of the Remington RF-05 is $129.99. Amazon has them for less at $112.00.

FTC Notice: Radians provided the boots for this review at no charge. Neither Remington nor Radians paid GunsHolstersAndGear.com or any of its writers money to write this review.

Hornady 6.5 Grendel Hunting Ammunition

By Richard on November 19, 2009 2 Comments

hornady_65grendelHornady has introduced several new hunting loads for 2010 including this one for the 6.5 Grendel.  Pushing a 123 grain Hornady A-MAX bullet at 2620 fps (1619 ft-lbs), this load gives the AR-platform guns a wider range of choices when hunting thin-skinned, medium sized game.

Additionally, Hornady stated they will also begin selling 6.5 Grendel brass and reloading dies to allow shooters to custom load their own cartridges.

New Online Magazine for AR Rifle Hunters and Enthusiasts

By Richard on October 28, 2009 No Comments

ar_guns_hunting_01aGrand View Media Group, publishers of Grand View’s Outdoors and other hunting magazines, launched a new digital magazine called AR Guns and Hunting.  This new online magazine is completely free.

The name of the magazine gives you a pretty good idea on what the articles are about.  What is nice about AR Guns and Hunting is the ability to incorporate “new media” into the design to give a richer user experience, while maintaining a traditional magazine feel.  So rather than only the nice photos you would find in a print publication, AR Guns and Hunting adds video and audio into the articles.

Concerned that this magazine is only looking at the .22 caliber version guns?  Don’t be.  AR-15′s in their various configurations are covered, as are the AR-10 series rifles.

If you like the AR platform guns, take a look.

ATI Shotgun Hunting Stock

By Richard on September 29, 2009 No Comments

ati_shotgun_stock_aFrom ATI:

ATI’s New Hunting Stock Adjusts To Hunter’s Full Range of Tactics.

Milwaukee, WI- After one year of new ownership under John Chvala and Eric Pfleger, Advanced Technology International (ATI), has developed and announced a new generation of shotgun hunting stock and forend that transitions your gun into a universal and versatile hunting tool.

ATI’s New Adjustable Hunting Stock adjusts in four positions from 12-3/8″ to 14-3/8″ with one easy push of a button, making the adjustment quick for your changing length of pull due to extra clothing during those winter months in the field. Hunters also may prefer a shorter length of pull during turkey season when you’re setting up on that gobbling tom.

Another big advantage to this system is that it enables youth to have a properly fitted gun, making their hunting experience much more rewarding. The incorporated neoprene cheek rest and recoil reducing buttpad with non-slip surface, offers added comfort when shooting. Interchangeable grips allow you to put your personal touch on your stock. The forend has been ergonomically tailored with a non-slip grip for added confidence.

This new DuPont Reinforced Polymer shotgun stock and forend fits the 12 and 20 gauge Remington 870, Maverick 88, Winchester 1200/1300 and Mossberg 500/590 models.

The adjustable Hunting Stock and Forend is weather proof, has a limited lifetime warranty and is available in Matte Black, Camouflage and ATI’s exclusive DyeHardTM Camo finishes.
