Streamlight TLR-2 G Review – Green Laser, White Light

By Richard on April 25, 2013 3 Comments

Want a powerful white light with green laser for your firearm? Take a look at this Streamlight TLR-2 G review for details on a very impressive unit that is rugged and doesn’t take up a lot of space.

Streamlight TLR-2 G Review

Announced earlier this year, the TLR-2 G combines a bright light and a green laser aiming device in one unit.  This allows a home owner or police officer the ability to mount one device on their handgun or long arm, reducing weight and size issues compared with multiple different units that would otherwise be needed.

Streamlight introduced the use of a green aiming laser in this device, which is said to be more visible than red lasers.

To see if the TLR-2 G passes muster, I obtained a unit and ran several tests on it for this review.

White Light

Weapon-mounted lights are nothing new.  However, their use is something that is far from universal.  Based on my own observations, very few armed citizens have them on their carry gun and probably only half (or less) of police officers have them mounted to their pistols.

We all know the first rule of a gunfight is to have a gun.  But, without being able to properly identify your threat, how do you know that it is time to shoot?  And once that decision is made, wouldn’t it be easier to hit your attacker if you could see him or her?  Having a bright light mounted on your pistol can make all the difference under stress.

Streamlight TLR-1s HP Review

By Richard on April 5, 2013 3 Comments

If you are looking for a high-powered weapon light for your long gun, take a look at the Streamlight TLR-1s HP.  It is a durable, reasonably priced unit that throws a lot of blinding light.

Streamight TLR-1s HP Review

I obtained a TLR-1s HP weapon light for review several months back and have been giving it a good workout ever since.  Although it will attach to the Picatinny rail on a number of my pistols, due to the size of the reflector this light has been used exclusively on a rifle.

Nuts and Bolts

The light easily attaches to an accessory rail in just a few moments, and requires no more than a coin to lock it into place.  The mount has a spring-loaded spring that, when pressed, allows you slip the light onto a Picatinny rail.  Then the screw is hand tightened to lock the light into place.  Using a coin you can then turn the screw another 1/4 to 1/2 turn to really lock it down.

With the light attached to the forward rail of a Rock River AR-15, I shot hundreds of full power 5.56 NATO rounds through the gun.  The Streamlight stayed locked into place and did not need any additional tightening or adjustment.

Stark SE-5 Express Grip – New AR15 Foregrip

By Aaron on February 18, 2013 No Comments

Stark SE5 Foregrip review

Stark Equipment’s pistol grips have been praised by many, including the military and law enforcement, for their scientific approach to designing grips that fulfill the needs of the end user.  This year Stark has introduced a new product, and some additions to already produced products.

THE NEW SE-5 EXPRESS GRIP

Stark announced the new SE-5 Express Grip at SHOT Show, and I had the chance to speak with DJ Webber at their booth.

The SE-5 will be a fore grip for AR-platform rifles that is designed for shooters who grip the rail or hand guard at the same time as the grip when shooting.  The SE-5 is unlike other grips that hang straight down that predominately require the shooter to place their hand completely on the grip, or perhaps wrap their thumb onto the hand guard.  There have been several tactical trainers that have advocated this grip stance as a better way to control recoil and maintain accuracy even in rapid fire situations.

CRKT Parasaw

By Aaron on February 7, 2013 3 Comments

CRKT Parasaw Evaluation

When I stopped by one of the CRKT booths this year at SHOT I got introduced to  several new knife designs.  I’ll be writing about those finds in separate articles over the next week or two.  However, I also got to see another new innovative design of an already popular accessory:  the CRKT Parasaw (Model 9300KL).

The Parasaw is a combination of the increasingly popular paracord bracelet and a very handy hidden tool.  The Parasaw is your standard woven 550 paracord bracelet with a secret tool hidden inside.  In between the paracord weave, designer Ken Onion has secured a Tungsten Carbide wire saw.  The saw is thin pieces of wire formed into small criss-crossing strands.  Every so often the strands are linked together to ensure the saw “blades” stay together.

Head On Tactical Shotgun Shell Pouch

By Richard on January 31, 2013 No Comments

Head Down Shotgun Pouch

I just stumbled across a small company called Head On Tactical that is making a variety of pouches, bags and carriers for all of your tactical needs.  They have a bunch of cool looking products in MultiCam, A-TACS, plus the more “pedestrian” coyote, black and Ranger green.

One of the products I think is really innovative is the Vessel Pursuit Shotgun Pouch they developed with the guys at MARSEC4.  The pouch compactly holds 24 shotgun shells and divides them up with color-coded pulls to more easily distinguish between two different rounds like slugs and buckshot.

ElZetta ZRX Flashlight Mount

By Aaron on January 27, 2013 2 Comments

ElZetta ZRX

[Ed. note:  This is an introduction to the ElZetta ZRX flashlight mount from our experience with it at the 2013 SHOT Show.  When we get one to test (on order already), we will have a full review here.]

Over the last couple of years we have come to know ElZetta as an innovative company that offers solutions to fill the voids sometimes left by other manufacturers.  Sitting in a smaller booth on the basement floor of the SHOT Show, it would be easy to miss them in the mass of smaller vendors downstairs.  Thankfully we picked up on their offerings and have found the reps to be more than helpful in showing off their gear.

This year I stopped by the booth and took a look at one of the newest flashlight mounts ElZetta is offering – the ZRX.  ElZetta rep, Dave Barnett walked me through the specifics.  This flashlight mount combines hard anodized aluminum clamp rings with a polymer body that makes the ZRX extremely light weight at only 1.1 oz.

Comp-Tac Trojan Horse

By Richard on January 16, 2013 No Comments

While at Media Day, I got a chance to see the Comp-Tac Trojan Horse, which is a discreet way to carry a rifle or carbine.  The case looks more like an over-sized tennis racquet case than it does a rifle bag.  This allows someone to legally carry a gun into places in a manner that will not draw attention.

Trojan Horse

Gordon Carrell, the general manager for Comp-Tac, gave me a demonstration of the Trojan Horse, and convinced me that this case is a well designed product that will please most shooters who are in the market for such a tool.  The  case is not flimsy, and appears it will stand up to many years of service, even from neanderthals like me.
