The CountDown magazines feature:

  • High impact polymer 30 round .223 magazine
  • Non-tilting followers
  • Corrosion resistant Stainless Steel Follower
  • Color coded visual indicator on back of magazine shows the number of remaining rounds
  • Second color coded visual indicator on bottom of magazine allows user to select fuller magazine
  • 100% magazine reliability
  • In stock for immediate shipment
  • All EMA products have a 100%, unconditional, lifetime warranty

From EMA Tactical:

EMA Tactical is proud to introduce our new CountDown Magazine.

ema_countdown_mag_02aThis unique magazine provides the operator with a visual indicator showing the amount of remaining rounds in the magazine. This 30 round polymer magazine is available in .223 caliber and features an non-tilting follower and a corrosion resistant stainless steel spring. The magazine body is made from a high impact polymer strong enough to be run over by a truck and still function.

Designed with a window in the back of the magazine, the operator can instantly see how many rounds remain without moving his head from the rifle cheekpiece. The operator only needs to glance down to know how many rounds remain. The visual indicator is also color coded for easier viewing, 30 to 21 rounds have a green background, 20-11 rounds have a yellow background and 10-0 rounds have a red background.

In addition, there is another window in the bottom of the magazine which displays the color so the user knows to pick the most loaded magazine from the magazine pouch. The counting system does not interfere with magazine disassembly or reduce the magazine capacity. This is the first magazine to offer the operator this capability. No more unexpectedly finding yourself with an empty magazine No more guessing how many rounds are left in the magazine. The operator can immediately tell at a glance of the eye how many rounds are available.

EMA Tactical also now offers a 30 round polymer .223 magazine with the non-tilting follower, a corrosion resistant stainless steel spring and a high impact polymer magazine body without the countdown feature.

Remington RF-05 Hunting Boots

By Richard on December 15, 2009 No Comments

remington_rf5_03aNeed a pair of hunting boots?  Take a look at this review of the Remington RF-05 hunting boots.  These Remington boots are an all-purpose 8″ leather hunting boot. The RF-05 has a Max-Dri waterproof liner, making these boots a good choice in all weather conditions.

Radians, who manufactures these boots under license, sent me a pair of  these boots for review.  When I first pulled this pair of boots out of the box, I was immediately impressed by the look and style of them. The leather has a rich brown color, and a pleasant feel.

The boots were comfortable to put on, and sized correctly.  I wear a 10 1/2, and these fit exactly right.  With a thicker winter sock, I would suggest looking at a 1/2 size larger boot.

remington_rf5_02aThe laces seem a little thinner than other boot laces, but they seemed strong enough for regular use in the field.  The upper part of the boots had speed lace loops, allowing for easy lacing up and removing of the boots.

Wearing the boots in the field, I found them to be comfortable with very little break in needed.  The soles gave very good support.

Additionally, the ankle support was excellent.  I have the awful tendency to ‘roll’ my ankles.  These Remington RF-05 boots fully supported my ankles, and I had no problems while wearing these in the woods.

The waterproof liner worked as advertised.  I found a few puddles to stand in, and the water never got to my feet.  If you have ever been in the field with wet feet, you know how miserable that can quickly become.  I never wear any boots into the woods that are not waterproof for that reason.

Overall, I really liked these boots.  They look good and are comfortable to wear.  As a general purpose hunting or field boot, I think they are worth a look.  The suggested retail price of the Remington RF-05 is $129.99. Amazon has them for less at $112.00.

FTC Notice: Radians provided the boots for this review at no charge. Neither Remington nor Radians paid GunsHolstersAndGear.com or any of its writers money to write this review.

Magpul AFG

By Richard on December 2, 2009 2 Comments

magpul_afgThe Firearm Blog posted an introduction to the Magpul AFG.  The AFG, or Angled ForeGrip, is a new concept for hanging onto your AR-platform gun.  It is an interesting idea, but like anything designed to hang off an AR, I’ll reserve judgment until I get a chance to shoot one.

Definitely check out The Firearm Blog for more information.

Black Friday Deals from Brownells

By Richard on November 27, 2009 No Comments

Brownells, one of our affiliate sponsors, is offering a number of Black Friday deals, good from now through midnight, Monday, November 30.  In addition to a flat 10% off everything on their site (use discount code CYB; minimum order $150), they are also offering some serious discounts on some AR-15 products.  Here are some of the highlights:

tango_down_01Tango Down Magazine – The Tango Down AR-15 magazines are on sale for only $13.99 each.  AR mags at the start of 2009 were scarce.  The manufacturers caught up to demand, but the current politicians are looking to pass new gun control legislation.  “High capacity” magazines for AR-15′s will be high on the list for any new bans.  At $13.99, these 30-round magazines are a steal.

blackhawk_rifle_bagBLACKHAWK! Rifle Bag – Brownells reduced the 41″ tactical BLACKHAWK! rifle bag to $69.99 from the regular price of more than $100.  The black, nylon bag is well padded and features five magazine pouches and an additional storage compartment.

trijicon_acogTrijicon ACOG Scope – One of the best rifle scopes in combat today is the Trijicon ACOG.  Right now, Brownells is offering the 2.0×20 dot Trijicon ACOG at almost $400 off their normal price.  At only $699.99, this scope normally sells for $1090.99 at Brownells.  If you’ve been thinking about buying one of these, right now is the time to buy.  I don’t think you will see this optic at this price again.

DeWalt DPGA-3AAA LED Flashlight Review

By Richard on November 17, 2009 1 Comments

dewalt_3aaa_01aThe DeWalt DPGA-3AAA LED flashlight is one of a series of DeWalt flashlights I have reviewed this year.  Fitting neatly between the sizes of the DPGA-3D full size flashlight and the pocket-sized DPGA-1AAT, the 3AAA has a number of features to make it a good choice for navigation lighting, work lighting, or even as a tactical light in a pinch.  I found the light to be very solid, and it worked without any problems throughout the past six months I have been using it.

General Features

Like the other DeWalt flashlights, the 3AAA uses a CREE XLamp LED.  The 3AAA is rated at 80 lumens (total light output).  Like other LED flashlights, the 3AAA’s light is a much whiter light than regular incandescent bulbs, which tend to be yellow.  The center beam is well focused, providing a good spot across a room.  The flashlight also throws a good amount of less intense light around the center focus.

Smith & Wesson ExtremeOps CK5TBS Knife Review

By Richard on November 10, 2009 5 Comments

smith_knife_04aThe Smith & Wesson ExtremeOps CK5TBS knife is an inexpensive knife designed to clip to your pocket and open one handed.  Priced at less than $11 (street price), the ExtremeOps fits the budget of almost anyone needing a good quality knife for general use.  But does the S&W ExtremeOps deliver the quality necessary to make this a good value?  I believe it does.

As stated above, the ExtremeOps is a folding knife with a pocket carry clip that is designed to be opened with only one hand.  My knife had a 3 1/4″ blade featuring a sharp Tanto-style tip, with serrations on the last 1 1/4″.  The black finish on the blade has a very rich color that I found to be pleasing.  The blade on my ExtremeOps knife was very sharp.

The blade has a stud set into it to allow one handed opening.  I found that the stud did not catch on any clothing or otherwise hinder drawing the knife from a pocket.  However, I did find that the stud seemed too small for my hands, as I had some difficulty in opening the blade one-handed initially.  I did develop a technique that allowed me to open the blade reliably with only one hand.  However, I could never make the ExtremeOps knife open as quickly as I could one of my Benchmade or Spyderco knives.

smith_knife_05aThe handle of the knife is skeletonized metal with large and small holes.  The metal has a light texture, which is non abrasive to clothing, but does not add much to the user’s grip.  The black finish seemed very tough, and did not chip or wear during use.

The pocket clip is attached by three Torx screws.  Also black, the clip did show significant signs of wear after light use.  The clip kept the knife securely attached to my pocket throughout the day while working, runnning, and sitting.

The blade locking mechanism is the side lever inside the handle.  While this is not my preferred lock method, it worked flawlessly in the S&W ExtremeOps.

Knives are very useful tools.  Like most tools there are high quality and low quality knives that range from very expensive down to dirt cheap.  I own several very good knives, but I also like to have a number of inexpensive knives around to handle most chores that come up.  The Smith & Wesson ExtremeOps knife is better than the other knives I have handled around this price, and I found it to be a great value.  If you are looking for a working knife, not an heirloom, then this knife will likely satisfy your needs.

Amazon is currently selling this knife for less than $11, and it qualifies for free shipping!
