HR-45: National Firearms Licensing, Tracking and Banning
Posted by: | CommentsIn an effort to bring Illinois-style anti-gun legislation to the entire country, Rep. Bobby Rush has introduced HR-45, the Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act. This act would require a national database of firearm sales, licensing of firearms owners, and the bill would make it illegal to transfer firearms from one private person to another.
The bill would make it illegal to possess a handgun or long gun with a detachable magazine unless you were licensed. Additionally, the ban on transfers will eliminate private sales, requiring all transactions to go through a dealer and be tracked in the national database.
Further, firearms as gifts would be severely curtailed, limited to the “infrequent” transfer of a firearm “by an individual to a parent, child, grandparent, or grand-child.” This would eliminate an uncle gifting a firearm to his nephew, etc.
Please contact your elected representatives, and let them know your position on this dangerous legislation. Also, if you are not already a member, please join the NRA today! They are “on the ground” in D.C. everyday, fighting for our Second Amendment rights.
From the NRA:
U.S. Representative Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) recently sponsored H.R. 45, also known as “Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act.” The bill is, at its core and as its name implies, a licensing and registration scheme.
The measure calls for all handgun owners to submit to the federal government an application that shall include, among many other things: a photo; an address; a thumbprint; a completed, written firearm safety test; private mental health records; and a fee. And those are only some of the requirements to be licensed!
The bill would further require the attorney general to establish a database of every handgun sale, transfer, and owner’s address in America. Moreover, the bill would make it illegal to own or possess a “qualifying firearm” — defined as “any handgun; or any semiautomatic firearm that can accept any detachable ammunition feeding device…” [emphasis added] without one of the proposed licenses.
Additionally, the bill would make it illegal to transfer ownership of a “qualifying firearm” to anyone who is not a licensed gun dealer or collector (with very few exceptions), and would require “qualifying firearm” owners to report all transfers to the attorney general’s database. It would also be illegal for a licensed gun owner to fail to record a gun loss or theft within 72 hours, or fail to report a change of address within 60 days. Further, if a minor obtains a firearm and injures someone with it, the owner of the firearm may face a multiple-year jail sentence.
H.R. 45 is essentially a reintroduction of H.R. 2666, which Rush introduced in 2007. H.R. 2666 contained much of the same language as H.R. 45, and was co-sponsored by several well-known anti-gun legislators–including Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. H.R. 45 currently has no co-sponsors.
HR-197: National Right to Carry Bill Introduced
Posted by: | CommentsFrom the NRA:
U.S. Representatives Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Rick Boucher (D-Va.), recently introduced H.R. 197– the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2009″–a bill that would provide national recognition for valid state Right-to-Carry licensees.
The bill would allow any person with a valid carry permit or license issued by a state, to carry a concealed firearm in any other state if the permit holder meets certain criteria. In states that issue permits, a state’s laws governing where concealed firearms may be carried would apply within its borders. In states that do not issue carry permits, a federal standard would apply. The bill would not create a federal licensing system; it would simply require the states to recognize each other’s carry permits, just as they recognize drivers’ licenses.
Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) is expected to introduce the Senate companion bill in the near future. Rep. Stearns has introduced such legislation since 1995.
Please be sure to contact your U.S. Representative at (202) 225-3121, and urge him or her to cosponsor and support H.R. 197!

President Obama’s Official Anti-Gun Policies
Posted by: | CommentsWell, the new president has made the his anti-gun agenda official. Copied right from his transition website to the WhiteHouse.gov site:
Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.
So, look for President Obama backed legislation to:
- Allow the use of law enforcement data to sue gun manufacturers for the misuse of their products;
- Make it a crime to transfer ownership of a firearm from one citizen to another as a gift, inheritance, or private sale;
- Banning of the sales of semi-automatic rifles; and
- Criminalizing the sale and possession of magazines with a capacity above a random, arbitrary number.
Please, get involved! Talk to your elected representatives. Join the NRA. Write letters to your newspapers.
If we do nothing, our rights will be taken. If we stand up, and make our voices heard, we can make a difference!
NRA and San Francisco Close to Deal on Guns in Public Housing
Posted by: | CommentsFrom the AP:
The National Rifle Association says the San Francisco Housing Authority is preparing to drop its blanket handgun ban in public housing.
NRA lawyer CD Michel says the agreement, which settles a federal lawsuit, hasn’t been finalized. But he says if the settlement is approved as expected, the housing authority will allow public housing tenants to keep legally obtained handguns. In exchange, the housing authority won’t be required to pay any damages or attorney fees.
The NRA sued the housing authority a day after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a gun ban in Washington D.C.and ruled that individual citizens have a right to keep handguns.
$400 Million Lawsuit Against Bloomberg Stays in Georgia
Posted by: | CommentsThe federal 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the $400 million libel suit filed against NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg will stay in Georgia. The Smyrna, GA gunshop Adventure Outdoors, filed a libel suit against Bloomberg after Bloomberg said Adventure Outdoors was a “rogue gun dealer” responsible for arming criminals in NYC.
Bloomberg wanted the lawsuit out of Georgia where his counsel believed they would have an easier time proving his immunity. Bob Barr, representing Adventure Outdoors, was successful in convincing the 11th Circuit that the lawsuit should remain in Cobb County Superior Court, where it was originally filed.
Bloomberg used illegal methods to obtain dubious “proof” that Adventure Outdoors and other gun shops were regularly selling firearms in straw purchases.
As I stated in a previous article, I have purchased several firearms from Jay and his crew at Adventure Outdoors. They are a class act with good prices and inventory. I hope they get every penny from Bloomberg.

Gun Gifts: Christmas Shopping Ideas For The Firearms Enthusiast In Your Life
Posted by: | CommentsTrying to figure out what to buy the gun-guy or -gal in your life for Christmas? Here are a few ideas:
Less Than $20
In the Gravest Extreme, Stressfire
, and the The Gun Digest Book Of Concealed Carry
are all excellent books written by Massad Ayoob. I highly recommend each of them. Another very good book for someone interested in self protection is Armed Response: A Comprehensive Guide to Using Firearms for Self-Defense
by David Kenick, which I reviewed here.
Most ammunition can be purchased for less than $20/box. For a single box, your local dealer is probably the best vendor. For a larger quantity or for harder to find calibers, an online vendor like Natchez Shooters Supply, AmmoMan, or Midway USA is the best bet.
Speaking of ammunition, quality AR-15 magazines can still be had for less than $20. My favorites are the Bownells with the Magpul anti-tilt followers, but I also like the Magpul PMAG polymer magazines. Brownells is shipping as quickly as they come in, so if you order ASAP, they will likely be shipped before Christmas.
Bore brushes, cleaning patches, solvents, and oils are always needed and a good idea as a stocking stuffer.
Less Than $50
A NRA membership is perhaps the most important gun-related gift anyone can give this year. $25 includes a magazine of your choice plus all of the standard benefits such as firearms insurance, life insurance, legislative updates, and much more.
Handgun magazines are a useful gift. (The metal/poymer kind, not the paper mailed to you monthly kind.) With the run on all-things-gun, certain magazines, such as the Glock, have gotten more expensive ($25-30 tyically), but almost all common hangun magazines can be had for $35 or less.
More Than $50
A high intensity flashlight such as the inexpensive SureFire G2 Defender or the ultra-compact SureFire E1E are excellent choices for tactical lighting.
If your someone special owns a J-frame Smith and Wesson revolver, the Crimson Trace LG-405 Overmold Grips are an excellent purchase! Trust me, you surprise your significant other with a set of these, things are very good on Christmas morning!
While an AR-15 is certainly more sexy, the ubiquitous .22 rimfire rifle is a fun rifle to shoot plus it is inexpensive to purchase and keep fed with rimfire ammo. Nearly every rifle maker has at least one .22 rimfire in their line. Ruger’s 10-22 is pretty much the gold standard, but I really like the inexpensive, tube fed Marlin 60, which can be had for less than $150 at your local dealer or even WalMart.
Price Is No Object
If price is not a consideration, a trip to Gunsite or Lethal Force Institute is one of the best Christmas gifts you can give. Nothing beats professional training, and these schools are the best at what they do.
Brady Campaign: “There’s More Work To Do”
Posted by: | CommentsThe notorious Brady Campaign, which actively works to curtail the Second Amendment, released a statement today praising former President Clinton’s signing of the Brady Law 15 years ago as a “critical first step.”
“This is a happy anniversary, but a reminder that we need to do more,” said Sarah Brady, Chair of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
What is their next step?
“While we celebrate the Brady Law’s huge success, we also must remember that too many sales — from so-called ‘private sellers’ at gun shows, through classified ads and by word of mouth — still don’t require background checks,” said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Center.
Ah, yes…the fabled gun show loophole.
The next step that Brady and Helmke would like to make is to eliminate, or at least have the government involved in, private transfers of firearms. This includes a regular guy like me wanting to sell a rifle to another guy, or even me buying a firearm for my son at Christmas. (They think that is a ‘straw purchase.’)
What the Brady Campaign tries to do is create an inaccurate image of gun shows to the general public. The Brady Campaign paints a (false) picture that gun shows are somehow exempt from background checks, almost like a duty-free section of an airport is exempt from taxes. Of course, this is false. All gun dealers are required to perform background checks regardless of where they may be doing business at. The Brady Campaign’s true aim is to restrict private transfers between two citizens.
Let us be perfectly clear. An anti-gun President and Congress will be taking office on January 20. The Brady Campaign and their ilk are emboldened and will be charging hard to take away your rights by restricting sales and importation of new firearms, registering the ones currently in your safe, and eventually banning what you already own. Ammunition taxes are likely to increase and all sorts of onerous government intrusions into private transfers are coming.
Standing in the doorway when the government shows up for your guns is a lost cause. Standing up for your rights NOW, while we still have them, is extremely important.
Get involved at the local level, write and call your elected representatives, and please, join the NRA. If we can triple membership, we can stop a lot of the bad laws that will be coming our way.
