NRA Membership: Your Vote for Freedom

Posted by: Richard | Comments (0)

During the next few years, President-elect Barack Obama and a liberal Congress will work to take away your Second Amendment rights.  There is not much that can stand in their way.

NRA MembershipToday, more than ever, we need every gun owner to join the NRA.  The National Rifle Association is the largest, best represtned gun rights organization in Washington D.C.  They represent you in the offices of every Congressman and Senator on Capitol Hill.

As the new semi-auto ban bills, registration bills, ammunition taxes, and prohibitions private sales come up for votes…the NRA will be there representing our rights.  The more members they have, the more clout they have to convince out elected representatives that we matter….that the Constitution matters!

If you think of gun rights as a wagon, being pulled through the mud of Washington politics, NRA members are the ones out pulling that wagon through to higher ground.  If you are not a member, you are just riding in the back, bogging it down in the D.C. mud.  Join us today!  Get out and help pull!

The next four years can be bad for gun rights and the Constitution.  However, if we all unite, we can make a difference!  Join the NRA today!  Already a member?  Great!  You can extend your membership here also.

Defend Freedom: Join the NRA!

Posted by: Richard | Comments (0)

This year has seen a landmark Supreme Court case recognizing the Second Amendment for what it is: an individual right of every citizen of the United States to keep and bear arms for self defense against criminals and a tyrannical government.  But the decision was reed thin.  Any shift in the court can reverse this ruling.

Obama Barack gun ban NRAThis year has also seen the rise of a very anti-gun politician who may be the next president of the United States.   Barack Obama is very close to winning the presidency.  Obama is one of the most anti-gun politicians the USA has seen.  His running mate, Joseph Biden, wrote the original “assault weapon” ban in the 90′s.

The National Rifle Association has defended the rights of ALL Americans and will continue to do so regardless of who wins this presidential election.  Membership is extremely important.  The NRA only has as much influence as they have members.  If half of the gun owners in America were NRA members, our Second Amendment right would not be in danger.  As it stands now, a few of us are shouldering the burden for all gun owners.

Please…if you are not a member of the National Rifle Association, join now!  If you are a member, double check your membership and make sure it has not lapsed.  Renew if it has.  If you are already a current member, consider upgrading to a life membership.

If we do not stick together, the Obama administration will pick apart the gun community.  As Benjamin Franklin famously said, “We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”

There have been various reports in the media regarding the recent court ruling on Florida’s “Guns to Work” law. The law, which allows law-abiding Florida citizens to keep a gun locked in their car while at work, was challenged by the Florida Chamber of Commerce.

In an effort to clear things up, the National Rifle Association and the Unified Sportsmen of Florida released this joint announcement:

National Rifle Association & Unified Sportsmen of Florida

INFORMATION SHEET

Federal Judge Hands Huge Defeat to Florida Business Lobby on “Guns-at-Work” law

The Florida Chamber of Commerce and The Florida Retail Federation argued for three years that business owners had an absolute right to control their employees. That’s why they kept calling it the “take-your-guns-to-work” legislation.

They claimed they could search employee vehicles and ban firearms from those vehicles in the employer’s parking lot. They claimed businesses didn’t care if customers had guns in cars, they only cared about their right to control employees. When the legislature passed the law protecting the rights of workers, The Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Retail Federation filed a lawsuit in federal court asking the Court to throw out the law.

They argued that the law requiring businesses to allow guns in vehicles in their parking lots constituted an unconstitutional “taking” of their property. In court, the federal judge ruled against them – THEY LOST.

They argued that OSHA regulations require them to provide a safe work environment for their workers, which required them to bans guns in parking lots to comply with OSHA requirements. In court, the federal judge ruled against them – THEY LOST.

They argued that, as employers, they had an absolute right to control the conduct of their employees and could ban guns from employee vehicles in company parking lots while employees were at work. In court, the federal judge ruled against them – THEY LOST.

Those are the three points argued by the Chamber and the Retail Federation. THEY LOST ON ALL THREE POINTS.

At the hearing and in his ruling, the judge complained about language drafted by the legislature saying that it doesn’t give businesses clear guidance on whether the laws allows business owners to ban customers from having guns in their cars in parking lots. Rather that clear up the confusion according to the intent of the legislature, he ruled that businesses can prohibit customers from keeping guns in their in the parking lot.

CURRENT STATUS:

The judge upheld the new NRA-supported law.

If a business has a gun ban policy, employees who possess a valid Concealed Weapons License are exempt from the gun ban policy and cannot be fired for exercising their gun rights.

If a business has a gun ban policy and no employee has a valid CW license, then that business can also ban customers from having guns locked in their vehicles in the parking lot while they shop or conduct business.

A business may not search vehicles to see if a person has a firearm; may not ask if a person has a firearm in the vehicle; may not ask if a person has a CW license.

PRACTICAL EFFECT:

Before the law passed, employees had no protection from anti-gun employers. They had no recourse. They had to give up their firearm and self-defense rights or be fired. They now have protection. WORKERS WON – BUSINESS LOBBY LOST

Due to the judge’s ruling based on inartful language, business owners can post signs notifying customers that they are prohibited from having firearms locked in their vehicles while in the parking lots. CUSTOMERS DON’T HAVE TO PATRONIZE A BUSINESS THAT DOESN’T RESPECT THEIR RIGHT TO KEEP A GUN IN THEIR CAR – THEY CAN SPEND THEIR MONEY ELSEWHERE – CUSTOMERS WIN – BUSINESS LOSES

Spokespersons for the Florida Chamber and the Florida Retail Federation are claiming victory, praising the judge for ruling that businesses can keep customers from having firearms in their vehicles in parking lots. It remains to be seen if business owners will agree that they won anything. They probably wish the Florida Chamber and the Florida Retail Federation would just shut up and quit alienating customers.

Our position is: Big Business lost. The People won.

On July 2, 2008, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal signed Senate Bill 51 into law.  SB 51 allows all law-abiding employees, invitees, and customers to keep firearms locked in their vehicles while parked on publicly accessible parking lots, unless state or federal law already prohibits the possession of firearms on the premises, or the vehicle in question is company-owned or leased. While SB 51 primarily affects parking lots that are accessible to the general public, businesses which provide secure parking for its customers or employees (parking that is inaccessible to the general public) must also provide storage facilities, such as lockers, for their customers or employees to temporarily place their firearms, or provide alternative parking for customers or employees who wish to transport and store firearms in their private motor vehicles. That alternative parking area must be reasonably close to the secure parking area.  SB 51, now ACT 684, is effective 8/15/2008.

Please thank Governor Jindal for signing this critical bill into law. You may contact the governor by clicking here.

In 1998, former Massachusetts Governor Paul Cellucci (R) signed a law into effect that continues to violate our Second Amendment rights. Wednesday, July 23 will mark the ten-year anniversary of the signing of the Gun Control Act of 1998. Chapter 180 of the Acts was signed with the ill-conceived notion that crime and violence would be eradicated from the streets. Not only has this notion proven to be incorrect by the increase in criminal activity, but it’s also been in direct violation of our Second Amendment rights.

As a result, July 23, 2008 will be known as the “Boston Tea Party 2008″ and the National Rifle Association, in conjunction with the Gun Owners Action League (GOAL), are encouraging members to send a symbolic message to our elected officials that we want them to repeal Chapter 180. We are asking members to send this note, as well as a tea bag, to your elected officials to let them know, just as our forefathers did, that unfair treatment against lawful gun owners will not be tolerated.

In response to the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down the Washington, D.C. ban on handguns, the Village of Morton Grove is considering amending its own ban on handguns.

The Village has banned the possession of handguns since 1981, but according to its website, “Mayor Richard Krier has directed Corporation Counsel Teresa Hoffman Liston to prepare an ordinance for Village Board consideration amending the Village’s Municipal Code, Section 6-2-3 so it is compliant with the Supreme Court decision.”

The ordinance is scheduled to be on the Village Board’s agenda tonight, Monday, July 14. This meeting will start at 7:30 PM, and will be held in the Richard T. Flickinger Municipal Center, 6101 Capulina Avenue, Morton Grove.

Continuing concern about the treatment of firearm dealers by BATFE has caused members of the U.S. House of Representatives-with NRA-ILA’s full support-to push for new and improved reform legislation. That push has taken the form of H.R. 4900 — the “Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Reform and Firearms Modernization Act.”

H.R. 4900 represents NRA-ILA’s latest efforts to pass legislation that will make it easier for lawful gun owners and dealers to comply with federal law and regulations, while ensuring that those who break the law are punished accordingly. This bipartisan bill also serves as a vital step toward modernizing and improving BATFE’s overall operations. The bill would roll back unnecessary restrictions, correct errors, and codify longstanding congressional policies in the firearms arena, and is a vital step to modernize and improve BATFE operations.

NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox has written a comprehensive article on this issue that appeared in the April issues of NRA’s magazines. In the article, Cox pledges his commitment to winning the reforms that H.R. 4900 proposes, but cautions that, “the key to our ultimate success will be the dedication and commitment of NRA members who call and write the Congress, and who turn out to campaign for candidates who support our Second Amendment rights.” (To read this article now, please click here.)

To that end, please be sure to contact your U.S. Representative at (202) 225-3121, and urge him or her to cosponsor and support H.R. 4900, the “Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Reform and Firearms Modernization Act.”

As of this writing, H.R. 4900 has 222 cosponsors. To see if your Representative is cosponsoring H.R. 4900, please click here.

On Thursday July 10, Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) signed into law the Post-Purchase “Safety Inspection” Repeal Package.

These important bills, Senate Bill 370 and House Bills 4490 and 4491, will remove the cumbersome post-purchase “safety inspection” on handguns and will go into immediate effect. The requirement of a safety inspection was a burdensome waste of time for law-abiding gun owners and these bills will address that inconvenience.

Thank you to all citizens who answered the call to help enact this legislation. Without you, this victory would not have been possible.

Today, the Louisiana House of Representatives voted 66-35 in favor of Senate Bill 51, the NRA-backed bill allowing employees and customers to keep firearms locked in their vehicles while parked on a publicly accessible parking lot controlled by a business.

SB51 would clarify that current state law allowing Louisianans the right to possess lawfully owned firearms in their private motor vehicles would supercede policies adopted by business owners or employers prohibiting the transportation or storage of guns in locked cars and trucks parked in unsecured, public-access parking lots.

SB51 now heads to the Senate for concurrence on either Sunday, June 22 or Monday, June 23. It is imperative that you contact your State Senator and urge him or her to support your right of self-defense by supporting SB51. We were able to gain support in the House due to the thousands of phone calls and emails that you made-now we need to do the same with the Senate! To find your State Senator please click here.

In a victory for Montesano’s law-abiding gun owners, Montesano, WA Mayor Ron Schillinger vetoed an ordinance banning the carrying of concealed firearms in the city’s parks, even by licensed Right-to-Carry permit holders.

Please contact Mayor Schillinger, TODAY and thank him for opposing this violation of state law and unjust and unwarranted attack on our right to self-defense and Second Amendment freedoms. Mayor Schillinger can be reached by phone at (360) 249-3021, ext. 102 or via email at mayor@montesano.us.
