Nikon Introduces TurkeyPro Shotgun Scopes

By Richard on February 2, 2010 No Comments

nikon_turkeypro_01aJust in time for 2010 spring turkey seasons, Nikon introduces the new 1.65-5x36mm TurkeyPro Shotgun Scope with Ballistic Turkey Reticle (BTR) available in Realtree APG, Mossy Oak Break Up or matte black to match your shotgun’s finish.

The new BTR reticle is designed to work as a ranging tool as well as an aiming device. The BTR’s circle within a circle construction allows shooters to use convergence to know when a turkey steps into range. Hunters simply place the small circle, on low power, or the large circle, on high power, to cover or subtend the turkey from head to wattles at 40 yards. The center circle acts as the aiming point and allows the shooter to still “see” the exact target spot even on low power.

The innovations with this turkey scope don’t stop with the reticle system. The TurkeyPro also features a removable Anti-Reflective Device (ARD), a first for turkey hunters. “Using an ARD in a turkey-specific scope is a first but it makes perfect sense given a turkey’s amazing eyesight and spooky nature,” said Jon Allen, General Manager Nikon Sport Optics. “The new TurkeyPro uses input from some of the country’s best turkey hunters and is the first scope to combine all those years of experience into one scope.”

Five full inches of eye relief means hunters can comfortably and safely mount this scope on even the hardest kicking magnum shotguns. With a super bright exit pupil of 7.2mm and Nikon’s multicoated lens you can hunt right up to roost time. The durable one-inch tube features hand turn ¼-MOA adjustment and a 50-yard parallax setting. Multicoated lens provide 92% Light Transmission for excellent low light performance.

The new TurkeyPro BTR is available in Realtree APG or Mossy Oak Breakup with a MSRP of $279.95 or in a matte finish with an MSRP of $249.95. All feature the new Ballistic Turkey Reticle and will be available in plenty of time for spring 2010 hunting seasons.

Sig Sauer P238 Tactical Laser

By Richard on January 21, 2010 7 Comments

sig_p238_laser_01aThe P238 Tactical Laser was introduced by Sig Sauer at the 2010 SHOT Show.  This .380 ACP pistol shares many of the same features as its single-action brethren including Siglite night sights, frame mounted safety and a 6+1 capacity.  It differs, though, in looks and with the addition of a laser.

The Sig laser is mounted under the barrel, on the front of the trigger guard.  The on/off switch is on the side of the laser housing, and seems easy to reach with either hand while holding the pistol.

The laser does not add any length to the gun, and very little additional weight.  The floor model was not working, so I was not able to evaluate the switch or brightness of the laser.

The P238 Tactical Laser model has a natural stainless steel slide, anodize black frame and custom aluminum grips.

LaserLyte RL-XD/XDM Rear Sight Laser for XD, Sig Sauer

By Richard on November 19, 2009 No Comments

LaserLyte introduced a new rear laser sight for the Springfield XD/XDM and the Sig Sauer line of pistols.  Featuring the same style rear laser sight that they debuted on the Glock pistols, the LaserLyte RL-XD/XDM replaces the rear pistol sight and is user adjustable.

From LaserLyte:

laserlyte_xd_01Introducing the Rear Sight Laser (RSL) – A ground-breaking new laser design incorporated into the rear sight. Compact size and revolutionary performance make the new RSL the most extraordinary system LaserLyte has ever produced. Easy-to-install and easy-to-operate, the new RSL offers a high-power laser with the benefit of not having to replace existing grips, internal stock parts or holsters.

The activation switch is a strategically placed button at the back of the slide that is easily activated by the thumb in a normal shooting position for left- or right-handed shooters. First press of the activation switch produces the constant on mode, second press produces pulse mode, and third press deactivates the laser. A small LED on the back of the laser indicates if the laser is on and what mode it is in.

laserlyte_xd_02The RSL fits all Springfield Amory XD/XDM pistols and is constructed from MIM 4650, nickel enriched high carbon steel, the same material used for most heavy-duty gun parts such as iron sights, hammers and levers. It is also black oxide, bead blasted for a non-reflective finish. When mounted onto the pistol the RSL will fit all Level 1 and 2 holsters. Powered by four 377 batteries, commonly used in watches, that provide one hour of run time on constant on and two hours in pulse mode. LaserLyte also offers discounted batteries. Rear Sight Lasers for additional pistol models will be introduced later this year.

CR-123 Batteries Can Explode

By Richard on November 4, 2009 No Comments

Dad always said “You get what you pay for.” Sometimes, though, you get more than you bargained for.

Keeping lasers and white lights fed with CR-123 batteries tends to be expensive, so it is understandable that people try to find the cheapest batteries possible to use.  The problem is inferior batteries can overheat, catch fire, and even explode.

Massad Ayoob describes the problem on his blog, and even includes photos of a Glock damaged by batteries that exploded inside an Insight M6X laser/white light that was mounted on same.  He even has photos of the injured hand and damaged clothing of the poor guy wearing the Glock when the batteries went ‘boom.’
