New Gen 4 Glock Information

By Richard on November 14, 2009 2 Comments

[Update 12/18/2009: Gen 4 Glock photo is here.]

More information on the new Gen 4 Glock pistols was leaked this week on the Handgun Podcast.  Host Eric Shelton described three new features of the fourth generation Glock pistols: adjustable backstraps, a new texture, and a dual recoil spring.

Shelton stated he was in a Glock Armorer School hosted by Dennis Tueller, and during that class the Gen 4 Glock was discussed.  Shelton said the new Glock pistols would have adjustable backstraps, which was leaked back in July of this year, but Glock has declined to publicly confirm.

Shelton said the new grip texture was not the RTF2 texture introduced by Glock at the 2009 SHOT Show.  Rather, Shelton stated the new grip was less aggressive than the RTF2, but more aggressive than the ‘standard’ third generation frame.

While both of the above new features I discussed previously, Shelton did describe something that my sources had not mentioned: a new recoil spring assembly.  Shelton said the new assembly had two recoil springs to better tame recoil.  While felt recoil is more of an individual perception, Shelton said Glock told them that with the new springs, the .40 S&W feels like a 9mm.  I am assuming the new spring assembly would be like the system used in the ‘baby’ Glock pistols such as the model 27.

If you don’t already listen, I encourage you to check out Shelton’s podcast.

Gun Dudes: A Podcast for the Masses

By Richard on October 22, 2009 No Comments

Do you have a group of guys that you sit around with, and talk guns, crack jokes, and quote action movies?  If so, you’ll feel right at home with the Gun Dudes podcast.

A lighthearted, actually fun approach to discussing firearms, the Gun Dudes are a group of guys that cover topics from concealed carry to IDPA shooting with a liberal helping of humor thrown in to keep the conversation interesting.

While each show will have some specific topics (also known as toe-picks), the Dudes also start each program with a bit of news that highlights citizens using firearms to defend themselves and their families.  A regular segment, the Misfire Award, discusses a criminal act that stands out from the crowd due to its over-achieving level of stupidity.

The Gun Dudes podcast is a member of the Gun Rights Radio Network (GRRN), which includes a wide range of gun and shooting related podcasts.

The Gun Dudes are Carl, (Tactical) Tom, and Stan with frequent guests dropping in to add to the conversation.  Though we have never met, listening to these guys is like sitting around with my own friends.  It is a great program, and I highly recommend it.

Carl was kind enough to answer a few questions via e-mail about the program:

GHG: How did the Gun Dudes come into being?  Why start a podcast?

Carl: I listen to around 45 to 50 different podcasts about a wide range of topics. From technology, and reading, to games, and sports. Because I am a UPS driver I am by myself 10 to 11 hours of the day and my route has only 1 business, so I NEED to be entertained. (us little fellas get lonely by ourselves, and my route is next to a mountain. No radio reception.)

At the time I was hearing nothing but negative from nearly all radio shows and I had not heard of the GRRN yet, so I started trying to find a lighthearted show that would make me laugh or at least entertain me but still talk about guns. I know the negative stuff is important because it keeps us aware, but it wears you out after a few episodes. I wasn’t able to find a show like that so I went to Tom and Stan (who are also UPS drivers, and friends), and explained my idea. I figured it would work because the way we talk to each other in real life is very similar to the way we talk on the show. (we tone it down for the show… no kidding). We love to mock one another, and poke fun. We love to quote movie and show lines to each other to see if the others can guess the show, ect…I wanted to hear a show about guns where the people made me remember how much fun shooting is. The competition with each other, the down talk about the others guns. Talk to me like my friends do.

I convinced them to try it out for 5 episodes and see how it went. They were great. Tom and Stan really do have great wits and I think all our personallities mesh well together. We had so much fun even though we sucked and know nothing about computers or radio and the feedback has (almost) always been great. We don’t make any money from the podcast and we don’t really care if we ever do, because the show has become our hobby.

GHG: What are the goals of the Gun Dudes podcast?

Carl: I guess our goal is to remind others to have fun. Negative talk wears people out. I think it makes their minds tired. We wanted to be a “break” for them. Yet still keep them up on why its important (the News) the stupid criminals (Misfire Awards) and keep it light.

Our honest feeling is, if someone else put out a better show and everyone else told us to quit, we would. Because then we could listen to their show while we drive our UPS trucks. Thats why we love to mention other podcasts that we listen to. They are better than us and they inform us. Especially the ones from the GRRN. They really are the shows we listen to, along with a few others. We are very simple people. We just want to be entertained while we work.

GHG: Where do you see the podcast going?

Carl: We put ourselves on itunes in the video games and hobbies section for a reason. There are a ton of young gamers that play games with guns and they know all about the best guns to have and how to equip them, but they have never seen one. Or they are told guns are evil and “a gun will kill”. We hope they will find our podcast and be entertained enough to listen to why we love our guns, and why we need them sometimes for protection. Also we hope to make them spray cola out their nose sometimes. We do that to each other in the UPS break room, why not to them as well.

If we go no further than that, I don’t think we did too bad. Anything further than that we don’t know. We just want to “do something” to help our hobby survive.

Down Range Radio Podcast by Michael Bane

By Richard on August 22, 2009 No Comments

bane_01Long time gun writer and TV personality Michael Bane publishes a weekly podcast called Down Range Radio.  The show is a general firearms program that covers Second Amendment issues, product reviews, shooting, competition, Bane’s TV programs, and other bits of random things that may relate to music, outdoors, extreme sports, or even gang-bangers in Tampa, FL.

Each program is about an hour, and comes out on Wednesdays.

Podcasts, if you aren’t aware, are audio or video recordings published on the Internet in a fashion similar to syndicated radio or TV shows.  Most podcasts are free, and many are produced by the average guy or by a small business.  If you have a computer with an Internet connection, you can download and listen to podcasts. Ruger SR-556: More Information and Interview

By Richard on May 20, 2009 1 Comments

Eric Shelton at the Handgun Podcast (Shelton….) has a great interview with Todd Wilkinson, the Chief Engineer for Rifles at Ruger.  The interview covers the new Ruger SR-556 that was introduced last week at the NRA Meeting in Arizona.

ruger_sr-556_012For those just hearing about it, the Ruger SR-556 is Ruger’s new AR-style rifle that uses a two-stage piston rather than direct impingement, which promises greater reliability.  In the interview, Wilkinson states that they have been running one of the SR-556′s without cleaning or lube for 15,000 trouble-free rounds. The Survival Podcast

By Richard on November 10, 2008 2 Comments

Hi.  My name is Richard and I am a podcast addict.

Two years ago, my wife bought me an iPod and I discovered podcasts.  Gun podcasts to start with, followed by tech and humor podcasts.  Then I discovered Glenn Beck’s show is available as a podcast.  I could find almost anything I wanted as a podcast.  Recently I discovered The Survival Podcast.

The Survival Podcast is not strictly a firearms podcast.  However, the podcast does cover a lot of topics of concern to gun owners and has frequent shows about firearms.

The concept of the Survival Podcast is “Helping you live the life you want if times get tough, or even if they don’t.”  To that end, topics on independent living through getting rid of debt, alternative energy, understanding the economy, gardening, hunting, firearms, and emergency preparedness are all covered.

Unlike some surivalist-types that are hunkered down in a bunker waiting for “the big one,” the podcaster, Jack, is a real guy with a real job who has set out to provide a better life for his family by becoming more independent and taking responsibility for their safety and survival.

The podcast is published almost every weekday, as it is recorded in the car during a long commute.  There is background noise, but it is not awful.   Jack is very animated and keeps listeners engaged.  Frankly, some of the topics he has covered I never would have listened to if it had not been for his style and mannerisms drawing me into the conversation.

The Survival Podcast also has a very active forums section that is really worth checking out.  There are a lot of great ideas and conversations going on.

The Survival Podcast is completely free and worth checking out.

Gun Rights Radio Network: Podcasts for Every Type of Gun Owner

By Richard on July 27, 2008 No Comments

Gun Rights Radio NetworkTwo years ago, my wife bought me my first iPod. I soon discovered ‘podcasting’ and the wide variety of free programming offered through iTunes. One of the first programs I discovered was the Gun Rights Advocate podcast hosted by Mark Vanderberg.

Podcasts, for those that don’t know, are audio (and in some cases video) files that you can download to listen to on your computer or iPod. Podcasts are most-often given away for free and follow a format similar to talk radio. Unlike traditional talk-radio, podcasts are pre-recorded.

Vanderberg began hosting a second podcast, Gun Rights News, and started forming alliances with other gun podcasters like Kenn Blanchard of The Urban Shooter. Vanderberg’s continuing efforts have brought us the Gun Rights Radio Network.

The Gun Rights Radio Network (GRRN) is a group of nine podcasters who work together to bring the public high-quality programing on a wide variety of firearms topics. From gun reviews by Massad Ayoob and John Strayer on the ProArms Podcast to Doc Wesson’s insights into the Mosin Nagant rifles at The Shot Show, there is something for everyone over at GRRN.
