Modern Handloading by Richard Lee: A Comprehensive Guide to Handloading, Reloading, and Bullet Casting

By Richard on August 10, 2008 No Comments

I recently picked up the second edition of Modern Reloading by Richard Lee. Modern Reloading is a comprehensive guide to reloading metallic cartridges, shotshells, and bullet casting.

As many loading manuals are, Modern Reloading is divided into two basic parts. The first half of the book is devoted to explaining the process of handloading cartridges andModern Reloading by Richard Lee shotshells, as well as describing bullet casting. The second half of the book is devoted to load data.

Richard Lee, the founder of Lee Precision, does an excellent job in walking the reader through the steps in reloading a cartridge. Lee’s causal writing allows the reader to easily grasp an understanding of headpsace without bogging down into unneeded complicated explanations. Although I have been reloading for some years now, I still found the front half of the book to be an enjoyable and informative read.

Modern Reloading claims to have the “world’s most comprehensive load data.” I do not have any way of proving or disproving this claim, but I can tell you that I found a lot more load data than I expected to find on some less common cartridges such as the 7.62x54R (3 pages) and 7mm Shooting Times Westerner (2 pages).

One unique aspect to the Modern Reloading load data is the inclusion of powder measurement by volume in addition to weight. All other load manuals list powder measurements exclusively in weight (grains). Modern Reloading also includes the volume measurements for reloaders using the powder dippers associated with Lee Precision’s gear. If you are using dippers, this book should be mandatory for your loading bench.

Modern Reloading is one of the least expensive load books on the market. I suppose that I should expect that it would be, as Richard Lee built his company for the value-conscious buyer. Frankly, I would suggest this book at double it’s price, so at $17.93 on Amazon, I feel it is a great bargain.

RCBS Rotary Case Media Separator: Outstanding Case Cleaning Acessory for Reloading

By Richard on July 17, 2008 No Comments

Like a lot of shooters, I reload my own ammunition. Cleaning the brass before running through the sizing and seating processes is always a good idea. I’ve tried washing the cartridge cases with various cleaning products, but have always come back to tumbling with walnut and corn cob media.

RCBS Rotary Media Separator reloadingSeparating the cases from the media has always been a bit of a chore for me. Not terribly difficult, but not very easy either. I have tried different sifters and separators, but never found one I really liked. That all changed when I bought the RCBS Rotary Case Media Separator.

This media separator is simple and it works! Two large halves form a clamshell-like case that catches the media in the bottom half, while the top half closes to trap the dust and significantly reduce noise. Inside the case is the separating device: another, smaller clamshell-like case with sifting holes and rotating handles.

The system is easy. Open the outer case and the inner separator. Pour the media and brass out of the tumbler into the separator. Close the separator and outer case. Turn the handle a few times and you are done. All of the media has dropped into the lower part of the case, leaving you with just shiny brass in the separator.

In my experience, the separator holds about 500 .38 Special cases and media. More than enough for most of the tumblers on the market.

Cleaning the RCBS Media Separator is easy: just wipe it down or hose it off. It is all heavy-duty plastic, so there are no parts to rust.

I was pleased with the ease in which the whole system works. I was very impressed by the reduced noise from this device as compared to other media separators.

The RCBS media separator is a great deal and can be had on Amazon today..
