Gerber Swagger Knife Review

By Richard on January 27, 2012 No Comments

(This article is a review of the Gerber Swagger knife.  The specific model reviewed is the partially-serrated version, but a fine edge version of the Swagger is also available from Gerber.  Please add your own experiences with this knife in the comments at the end of this review.)

At a Christmas party I got a Gerber Swagger knife during a gift exchange. I’ll take a knife as a gift anytime, and I have owned several Gerber knives so this was a welcomed addition.

Gerber Swagger Knife review

THE BLADE

This Gerber knife has a 3.2” blade according to the packaging, or 3.3” if you go to the Gerber website. That’s not the first time I’ve seen differences from packaging and websites. Measuring my blade it would appear that it’s closer to the 3.2” if I measure to the furthest extension of the grip, which extends out in the middle and tapers back to the sides. If I measure to the sides of the grip, behind the point on the blade, I could see the 3.3” measurement.

Field & Stream hydroProof ULTRA Review and Field Test

By Aaron on November 14, 2011 2 Comments

Field Stream hydroproof reviewFall is upon us and the deer are rapidly approaching the peak of the rutting season. The Rocky mountains and the northeastern states have already experienced their first heavy snows of the year, and other areas are experiencing the cold rain that comes as the weather patterns change from the heat of summer to the cold of winter.

If you’re planning on entering the woods to hunt, or are simply going to be out in the elements, you need to make sure that you have the proper gear to keep you warm and dry.  To help keep you comfortable, I wrote this review of the Field & Stream Field & Stream hydroProof Ultra outerwear.

I am truly blessed to live in a part of the country that boasts some of the biggest trophy bucks on the record books, but I also live in an area where the weather can go from 70 degrees one day to below freezing the next! Usually that brings some form of precipitation along with it. Having the right outerwear is crucial to a successful hunt, and is just as important as my selection of rifle and ammunition.

Another Review of the Diamondback DB9

By Richard on November 8, 2011 No Comments

Diamondback DB9 left side viewI ran a review of the Diamondback DB9 pistol in September.  I was impressed by the gun, and would not hesitate to buy another.  However, I offer you a second opinion.

Randall, a friend and writer at BlueSheepdog.com, wrote his own review of the Diamondback DB9.  After a break-in period, his pistol has run extremely well for him.

Randall adds a bunch of new information, including some company history and photos.

Smith & Wesson SD40 Review

By Richard on October 9, 2011 6 Comments

Smith & Wesson SD40 ReviewThe best value in handguns for sale today is the Smith & Wesson SD40. I know that is a bold statement, and many of you will balk at such an absolute proclamation. Keep reading the review and let me explain…

The Smith & Wesson SD40 is a striker-fired, polymer framed pistol that falls between the Sigma and M&P lines of handguns in terms of price and features. While S&W publicly states the SD line is a completely separate entity from their other lines, the SD40 definitely shares some of the parts and features of the Sigma and M&P series.

The SD40 is chambered in .40 S&W while the SD9 is chambered for the 9mm cartridge. Both the SD40 and SD9 are available in “standard” capacity and “low” capacity. Smith & Wesson gets a huge “attaboy” for correctly pointing out that standard capacity magazines are not high capacity magazines.

The S&W SD40 holds 14 cartridges in the magazine (10 in the low capacity magus), while the SD9 holds 16 rounds. Both the SD40 and SD9 ship with two stainless steel magazines. The magazines have visual inspection holes on both sides allowing the user to quickly assess how many rounds are loaded.

Diamondback DB9 Review

By Richard on September 25, 2011 10 Comments
Diamondback DB9 Review

Diamondback DB9 Review

Year of the 9mm? Maybe. I’ve seen a lot of new 9mm carry guns introduced this year. This Diamondback DB9 review takes a look at one of them.

The Diamondback DB9 is a polymer-framed, subcompact 9mm handgun. The double-action only pistol is striker fired. The DB9 uses six round magazines, giving the shooter a total of seven rounds on tap.

The DB9 is designed to be a very flat, compact pistol for self defense. I think it performs admirably in this role.

The 9mm Diamondback weighs only 11 ounces unloaded. It is only 0.80” wide, making it one of the thinnest semi-automatic pistols on the market. The pistol virtually disappears in a pocket or on an ankle.

The DB9 still manages to squeeze a 3” barrel into the package. Overall length of the gun is only 5.6” and the height is 4” with the magazine inserted.

There are no external controls on the DB9, which contributes to the thinness. The lack of external controls means there are less things to foul the draw from concealment. The downside is the DB9 does not have a slide stop.

Taurus 905 Review: 9mm Revolver

By Richard on September 13, 2011 6 Comments
Taurus 905 Review

Taurus 905 Review

In today’s review, I take a look at the Taurus 905: a small frame 9mm revolver. A 9mm revolver may seem like an oxymoron. Revolvers don’t chamber 9mm cartridges, right? Well, the 905 does.

Taurus 905 Basics

The 905 is a steel-frame revolver with fixed sights and a 2” barrel, making it a competitor to other small concealed carry guns like the J-frame revolvers from Smith & Wesson.

Like the Smith & Wesson revolvers, the cylinder rotates counter-clockwise. The cylinder release operates by being pushed forward, toward the cylinder.

The 905 has a fully shrouded extractor rod with a full under-barrel lug. The additional weight at the end of the barrel helps with recoil and it also protects the rod from being bent while carrying.

Massad Ayoob – In The Gravest Extreme

By Richard on September 27, 2010 No Comments

“Massad Ayoob,” I said.

“Who?” my friend asked.

I was recently talking with a friend of mine who is getting into firearms for self defense. As things typically go when someone knows I am a cop, they will start asking me for all sorts of advice on when and how to use a gun for repelling felons. My answer is pretty standard: Massad Ayoob.

For those that don’t know, Mas has been researching, writing, and teaching on the topic of firearms in self defense for more than 30 years. One of his first mainstream publications is In the Gravest Extreme, which is a book every person who has considered carrying a firearm should read.

If you haven’t read the book, please stop everything and go get yourself a copy immediately. Heck, if I know you, I’ll loan you mine.

Smith & Wesson SD40 Review Soon

By Richard on September 19, 2010 1 Comments
Smith & Wesson SD40 review

The new Smith & Wesson SD40 pistol.

The new Smith & Wesson SD40 is now in my hands, and I’m getting ready to get it to the range this week for a thorough testing and review.  First impression:  very nice.  The SD40 has a good feel in the hand, and while inexpensive, it does not feel cheap.

Update:  The full review of the S&W SD40 is up and posted.  Please take the time to read my review.  I was very impressed by the SD40, and I think it is one of the best values in handguns on the market today.  It was very reliable and was pretty darn accurate.

Overall, was very impressed by the new Smith & Wesson handgun.  But, check the review for all of the details on this fine pistol.

Sig Sauer P226 E2 Review

By Richard on August 31, 2010 8 Comments

Sig Sauer P226 E2 pistol

The Sig Sauer P226 E2 was one of the more understated new guns announced at the 2010 SHOT Show. A refinement of the P226 line, the new E2 had new ergonomic characteristics that pushed it to the top of my “must review” list.

The concept of the E2 pistols is fairly simple: take an established line of successful pistols and make them more shootable for a wider range of people. But with any fine machine, the details make the difference.

Good news: the Sig Sauer P226 E2 is a winner.

Taurus 740 SLIM Review Coming

By Richard on July 14, 2010 3 Comments

A review of the new Taurus 740 SLIM will be coming very soon.  I took delivery of one of the new pistols yesterday from my dealer, and will be getting it out to the range next week.

The 740 is very similar to the popular 709 SLIM pistol released by Taurus in 2009.  Rather than seven rounds of 9mm, the 740 packs six rounds of .40 S&W.

I am looking forward to getting this pistol out onto the range and reporting back to you on how it does.
