Smith & Wesson SD40 Review Soon

By Richard on September 19, 2010 1 Comments
Smith & Wesson SD40 review

The new Smith & Wesson SD40 pistol.

The new Smith & Wesson SD40 is now in my hands, and I’m getting ready to get it to the range this week for a thorough testing and review.  First impression:  very nice.  The SD40 has a good feel in the hand, and while inexpensive, it does not feel cheap.

Update:  The full review of the S&W SD40 is up and posted.  Please take the time to read my review.  I was very impressed by the SD40, and I think it is one of the best values in handguns on the market today.  It was very reliable and was pretty darn accurate.

Overall, was very impressed by the new Smith & Wesson handgun.  But, check the review for all of the details on this fine pistol.

Sig Sauer P226 E2 Review

Sig Sauer P226 E2 pistol

The Sig Sauer P226 E2 was one of the more understated new guns announced at the 2010 SHOT Show. A refinement of the P226 line, the new E2 had new ergonomic characteristics that pushed it to the top of my “must review” list.

The concept of the E2 pistols is fairly simple: take an established line of successful pistols and make them more shootable for a wider range of people. But with any fine machine, the details make the difference.

Good news: the Sig Sauer P226 E2 is a winner.

Taurus 740 SLIM Review Coming

By Richard on July 14, 2010 3 Comments

A review of the new Taurus 740 SLIM will be coming very soon.  I took delivery of one of the new pistols yesterday from my dealer, and will be getting it out to the range next week.

The 740 is very similar to the popular 709 SLIM pistol released by Taurus in 2009.  Rather than seven rounds of 9mm, the 740 packs six rounds of .40 S&W.

I am looking forward to getting this pistol out onto the range and reporting back to you on how it does.

ISSC M-22 Pistol Review

By Richard on June 25, 2010 5 Comments

issc_m22Carteach0 has another very good review on his website, this time of the ISSC M-22 pistol.  The ISSC M-22 pistol is a .22 LR handgun that looks a lot like a Glock pistol.  Though there are some significant differences between the Glock line of handguns and the M-22, Art points out the pistol can make for a good, inexpensive trainer.

Carteach0 is an excellent site that you should probably visit regularly anyway, but definitely check out this review.

BLACKHAWK! Tactical Knoxx Stock Review

By Richard on June 22, 2010 No Comments

Blackhawk Knoxx StockArt Welling, aka Carteach0, posted a really good review of the BLACKHAWK! Knoxx tactical folding stock at his site.

I had a chance to shoot several of the Knoxx stocks at the Norfolk PD range when visiting BLACKHAWK! in May.  I shot 12 gauge and .300 Win Mag with the Knoxx stocks, and I was extremely impressed by them.

The folding stock I played with in the classroom, but did not get a chance to shoot it.  Check out Art’s review and video for more information.

Gripwell Review for AR-15

By Richard on June 18, 2010 No Comments

gripwell_06a1The Gripwell is a bolt-on accessory for the AR-15/M-16/M-4 platform that significantly improves the use of the magazine well as a grip, and acts as a funnel for magazines in stress-reloads.

I found the Gripwell to be a useful addition to my Rock River AR-15, and could not find any faults with its performance.  More on all that in a moment.

Gunslick Snap-n-Pull Shotgun Cleaning Kit Review

By Richard on June 17, 2010 No Comments

gunslick_shotgun_01aThe Gunslick Snap-n-Pull barrel cleaning kit is a compact cleaning kit that combines the benefits of a Hoppe’s BoreSnake with the interchangeable parts of a traditional rod-style cleaning kit.

The Snap-n-Pull  system does away with the ‘old-school’ cleaning rods, and uses a flexible cable instead, allowing you to clean from the chamber through the barrel, and out of the muzzle.  Additionally, the cable rolls up nicely, meaning the kit can be stored in a small, soft-sided case.

Another benefit to the Snap-n-Pull system is different brushes and mops can be attached to the same cable.  So instead of having a dozen BoreSnakes, you can have one Gunslick cable that attaches to your different Snap-n-Pull brushes and mops to handle all of your rifle and shotgun calibers.

ASAP Survival Sidekick Bug Out Bag Review

By Richard on June 15, 2010 2 Comments

ASAP Survival Bag ReviewEd. note:  this is an ASAP Survival Pack Review

Social unrest, terrorist attacks, and natural disasters are constantly in the news.  People have seen that the normal systems of support break down in these events, and simple things like food and water may not be readily obtainable.  Preparing for possible problems only makes sense.  But how do you prepare?  And, for what?

Enter the ASAP survival packs.

Mossberg decided to offer a starting place for preparation by building a line of ready-to-go bug out bags (BOB).  The concept of a BOB is simple: a lightweight pack holding enough supplies to sustain you through a short term emergency as you evacuate to a safe location.  Think of it as the “ready to go” thing you grab when a firefighter knocks on your door and tells you to immediately evacuate due to a nearby chemical fire.  You don’t have time to go gather things; you have to go right now.

The New Review of the DeSantis Nemesis

By Richard on June 12, 2010 4 Comments

desantis_nemesis_new_01aThe DeSantis Nemesis is a synthetic pocket holster designed for a wide number of concealed carry firearms.  I’ll save you from the suspense: the Nemesis is an excellent holster that is also inexpensive, making it a great value.

I previously reviewed the Nemesis in August of 2009, but did not realize at the time that the Nemesis had undergone a few design changes to fix the problems I identified in that review.  I had the original-style Nemesis, but DeSantis released a new version of the holster a few months before I wrote my review.

In May, Gene DeSantis sent me a note letting me know the company updated the Nemesis.  He was kind enough to send me a current sample of the Nemesis for review, and I am happy to say that the holster meets all of my expectations.

BLACKHAWK! Be-Wharned Knife Review

By Richard on June 3, 2010 4 Comments

Blackhawk_BeWharned_12a.jpg

The Be-Wharned knife is the first BLACKHAWK! knife I have ever owned.  I’ve found that first impressions are generally accurate, and I was impressed the first moment I held the Be-Wharned knife.

No doubt about it, the Be-Wharned is a self-defense knife.  The 3.4″ blade is a wharncliffe design, which comes down to a sharp point.  The blade thins as you move from the handle to the point, meaning less resistance in cutting and stabbing motions.

The stainless steel blade has a plain edge, which from the factory is exceptionally sharp.  Ever see the ‘tough guy’ movies where one of the stars is able to shave with his sharpened knife?  The Be-Wharned comes from the factory that sharp.  I used it to shave a portion of hair off of my forearm with no effort whatsoever.  Don’t let the kids play with this knife.

The handle is made from aggressively textured G-10 with stainless steel inserts.  Don’t know what G-10 is?  Don’t worry; neither did I.  G-10 is a high-pressure laminate material formed from fiberglass and epoxy.  It is extremely durable, and is virtually impervious to water and climate changes.  G-10 material is also chemical and fire resistant.

Blackhawk_BeWharned_07a.jpg

In the case of the Be-Wharned knife, the G-10 provides an exceptionally durable finish that is textured with ‘scales’ giving the user a firm purchase on the handle.  The G-10 really provides a ‘no-slip grip.’  Compared to the other finishes available on knives, this is my favorite by far.

The only drawback to the G-10 handle is the texturing may be too rough on some pants pockets.  If you have a very nice designer suit, or even just moderately priced pants made from lightweight material, the Be-Wharned may not be the best choice if you plan on carrying a knife clipped to the pocket.  However, with jeans, uniform pants, and inexpensive cargo shorts, I didn’t have any problems with the textured handle of this knife.

Designed by trainer Michael Janich, the blade is made from AUS8A stainless steel.  The Be-Wharned uses a liner lock to hold the blade in place.  The lock seems very sturdy when I worked with it.

An ambidextrous thumb stud is mounted on the blade to allow for one-handed opening.  I found the blade opened easily, and it positively ‘snapped’ into place, giving me a tactile assurance that the blade was locked into position.

Blackhawk_BeWharned_08a.jpg

The Be-Wharned feels very well balanced in my hand.  The handle seems heavier than the blade, and when held aggressively, it feels very good.

The clip is securely fastened to the handle by three screws.  The handle is pre-drilled so you can move the clip to any one of four positions, allowing you to carry the Be-Wharned in the manner you prefer.  Tip up or down, right hand or left…you make customize it however you like.

Fortunately, I’ve never had to use a knife to defend myself, but I would be well-armed using the Be-Wharned.  Between the Janich design and the BLACKHAWK! quality, I heartily recommend the Be-Wharned knife to anyone needing a high-quality knife for personal defense.

  • blade length – 3.4″
  • overall length – 7.85″
  • blade material – AUS8A stainless steel
  • blade finish – satin
  • edge type – plain edge
  • handle material – 420J stainless steel liners with G-10 textured scales
  • MSRP – $99.99

Ed. note:  BLACKHAWK! provided the Be-Wharned knife free of charge for this review.
