AmeriGlo SKS NightSight

Posted by: Richard | Comments (0)

AmeriGlo is selling a night sight for the SKS rifle.  The AmeriGlo SK-717 is a replacement front sight for the SKS with a tritium insert.

Somehow, I had missed this option when I was looking for a front sight replacement for my Chinese paratrooper model.  The sight is a screw-in replacement, and should be a quick swap.  I do suggest you get a AK/SKS front sight tool, but you can get by without one.

Ruger SR-556 in 6.8 SPC Announced

Posted by: Richard | Comments (0)

Ruger announced the release of a new SR-556 rifle chambered in 6.8 SPC.

Wow.  I knew Ruger was ready to release a new product, but I believed we would be seeing the rumored SR40 pistol, not another rifle.

What I find to be very interesting about this product launch is two-fold.  First, Ruger making a major product announcement for a 6.8 SPC rifle really gives this cartridge a big push into the mainstream.  Secondly, Ruger has undoubtably sunk a significant portion of their money into this product meaning they believe there is a strong market for this gun.

The Ruger SR-556/6.8 SPC will ship with a five-round magazine and two 20-round magazines.  The 16.12″ heavy barrel is chrome lined and has a 1:10 twist.  Additionally, the barrel is threaded and outfitted with a regular SR-556 flash suppressor.

TAPCO Intrafuse Handguard for the AR-15

Posted by: Aaron | Comments (1)

The TAPCO Intrafuse AR Handguard is a fine alternative to the traditional aluminum quad-rail that many AR-15 owners consider as standard equipment today. The Intrafuse handguard is made of high strength composite material, and has full-length Picatinny rails on the top and bottom with half-length Picatinny rails on both sides.

The bottom and side rails have detachable covers, while the top rail remains open at all times. The covers are made of Santoprene, described as a high strength flexible rubber material, and are designed to be modular to fit the shooter’s desires. The covers can be removed in a matter of seconds, and do not require any tools to do so.

The handguard is designed with numerous ventilation ports to keep the barrel of the rifle from overheating.

The M4 Mission Statement

Posted by: Richard | Comments (1)

I guess everything has to have a mission statement.  According to the U.S. Army, this is the M4′s mission statement:

Deter, and if necessary, repel adversaries by enabling individuals and small units to engage targets with accurate, lethal, direct fire.

Another “5.56 NATO Bad” Article?

Posted by: Richard | Comments (4)

The debate over the effectiveness of the 5.56 NATO cartridge has raged for decades, and the current war in Afghanistan hasn’t changed things.  Critics of the 5.56 generally bemoan the lack of “stopping power” and poor long range performance as compared to other rounds like the 7.62×51 (aka .308 Win).

In a Marine Corps Times article (taken from the AP), the debate continues.  The article highlights the superior performance of the 7.62 at long ranges in the Afghan mountains (300+ meters).  In fact, the author talks about the Afghanis using .303 Enfields and old Mausers to whip the Soviets in the 80′s.  I hope follow-up articles don’t suggest equipping out troops with Mosin-Nagant rifles to bridge the “surplus rifle gap.”
