SIG 516 Chambered for 300 BLACKOUT

By Richard on November 18, 2011 No Comments

SIG 516 Chambered for 300 BLACKOUTSteve at TheFirearmBlog is reporting that SIG SAUER will introduce a version of the 516 rifle chambered for the .300 BLACKOUT cartridge.

A SIG516 chambered for the 300 BLK would be just one of the recent products announced for the cartridge.  Recently, Smith & Wesson announced an M&P15 chambered for the 300 Whisper and 300 BLACKOUT.  Additionally, new ammo and bullets from companies like Barnes and Sierra have been rolled out or announced ahead of the new year.

I suspect that we will see a lot of new products centered around the 300 BLK at the 2012 SHOT Show.

AR-15 Build Video Series

By Richard on November 11, 2011 1 Comments

The folks at ITS Tactical have put together an excellent series of videos on how to build your own AR-15.  They start with a stripped receiver and walk you through all of the steps necessary to assemble your own AR.

If you have not been by the ITS Tactical site, you really should check them out.  Block off some time, though, as you will likely be there for a while.

Quick Sighting: A Fast Way to Sight in Your Rifle

By Aaron on November 9, 2011 No Comments

Quick Sighting a RifleSo it’s early November and all over the country hunters are in the fields stalking that buck of a lifetime. The cool air has arrived, leaves are falling, and some areas of the country already have snow. Rifle season has already begun in some areas, and in others the opening of the rifle season is fast approaching.

One of the most important things a hunter or sport shooter must do is make sure that their rifle is zeroed. The need for zeroing goes for shooters using iron sights, scopes or other optics. Iron sights and red dot optics are their own animals, so I want to focus in on shooters using scoped rifles.

Something I realized recently is that many shooters aren’t aware of the easiest and quickest way to zero in their scoped rifle. Particularly if you have just had the scope mounted to that rifle. Some people think that having a rifle “bore” sighted is sufficient to make the rifle shoot on target.

Smith & Wesson M&P15 in 300 Whisper, 300 BLACKOUT

By Richard on November 1, 2011 No Comments
300 Whisper 300 BLACKOUT Smith & Wesson

The new S&W M&P15 rifle comes chambered in 300 Whisper and will also chamber 300 BLACKOUT cartridge.

Smith & Wesson announced a new M&P15 rifle chambered in 300 Whisper.  The S&W rifle will also chamber the popular new 300 BLACKOUT cartridge.

Two versions of the new M&P rifle will be available: one with a Realtree APG finish (shown here) and one with a black finish.  The Realtree version of the M&P15 will feature a 5/8-24 threaded barrel along with an A2-style flash hider, while the black version of the rifle will use a Yankee Hill flash hider.  Both rifles will have a 16″ barrel.

The black version of the 300 Whisper rifle will have a free floating, 10″ quad rail for accessory attachments.  Both rifles are “optic ready” with a Picatinny rail for the addition of traditional or electronic sights.

Both the 300 Whisper and the 300 BLACKOUT cartridges are design to work well with suppressors.  According to Smith & Wesson, “The feed ramps and gas system have been optimized to run effectively with a full-range of factory loaded sub-sonic and supersonic ammunition, both suppressed and unsuppressed. The barrel’s twist rate is compatible with a wide variety of bullet weights from 110 to 220+ grains.”

New Kel-Tec RFB Accessories

By Richard on October 18, 2011 No Comments

Kel-Tec announced three new accessories for the RFB rifle.  The accessories are a short quad-rail, a front sight riser, a tactical operating handle and a muzzle brake.  The Kel-Tec RFB (Rifle, Forward-ejecting Bullpup) is a .308/7.62 NATO rifle available in target and carbine models.

RFB Short Quad Rail

Quad-rails are exceptionally popular on the AR15 platform guns, so it is not a great leap to think that rails for the RFB might be popular as well.  The quad rail for the RFB is a short system, measuring about three inches in length.  The rails run from the rear of the flash hider to just forward of the gas system adjustment.

The rails will accept any 1913/Picatinny mount accessories and is made from “…hard coat anodized 6061-T6 aluminum.”

MSRP will be about $45 and should be available for order next week on the Kel-Tec website.

Ruger Mini-30 Tactical

By Richard on September 8, 2010 3 Comments

Ruger announced the new Mini Thirty Tactical rifle today.  Chambered in the 7.62×39 cartridge, the new Mini-30 has a 16 1/8″ barrel, synthetic stock, ghost ring sights, and flash suppressor.  The Tactical ships with one 20-round magazine.

Ruger machined scope bases into the receiver, and includes a set of scope rings.

Compared to the standard Mini Thirty, the Tactical has a barrel that is almost 2.5″ shorter.  Additionally, the barrel and receiver are a blued alloy steel instead of a matte stainless steel.  The ‘standard’ Mini Thirty rifles don’t have the flash suppressors that the Tactical does.

MSRP for the new Mini Thirty Tactical is $921, which is less than the $949-966 price tags on the other Mini Thirty variants.

And no, it is not California legal.

AmeriGlo SKS NightSight

By Richard on September 3, 2010 No Comments

AmeriGlo is selling a night sight for the SKS rifle.  The AmeriGlo SK-717 is a replacement front sight for the SKS with a tritium insert.

Somehow, I had missed this option when I was looking for a front sight replacement for my Chinese paratrooper model.  The sight is a screw-in replacement, and should be a quick swap.  I do suggest you get a AK/SKS front sight tool, but you can get by without one.
