Just Announced: New Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard 380 Pistol

Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard 380

Smith & Wesson just released information on the new M&P Bodyguard 380 pistol.  According to the company, the new pistol combines the characteristics of the M&P line with the features of the existing Bodyguard 380 pistols.

Features of the M&P Bodyguard 380

  • second-strike capability
  • thumb safety
  • stainless steel, adjustable sights
  • 11.85 ounces (unloaded)
  • ships with two magazines

The gun appears to be very similar to the original Bodyguard 380, with the biggest difference being the lack of integral laser.  While the built-in laser is a desired feature by many, some people do not want a laser aiming device.  Many police departments do not allow the use of a laser on a handgun, which precluded this gun’s use as a backup gun for many in law enforcement.

Bodyguard Compared
The two Bodyguard 380 pistols compared: the original is on the left, the new M&P version is on the right.

The Los Angeles Police Department approved the use of the Bodyguard 380, but only if the laser was rendered inoperable by an armorer.  I’ve had multiple law enforcement members e-mail me asking if Smith & Wesson made a Bodyguard 380 without a laser.  Now I can say yes.

MSRP is $379.  In recent years, Smith & Wesson has only announced a product when they have been ready for production.  It would appear to be true in this case, as the gun is already listed on the company’s website with a “buy now” option.

I’ve put together a list of holsters for the Bodyguard 380 that are currently available over at BlueSheepdog.com. Feel free to check that out and let me know what I missed.

The MA firearms roster just specifies Bodyguard… I’m guessing the m&p bodyguard is Ok to own in MA???

New SKU likely means requalification, so don’t expect to see it on the shelves anytime soon in MA,

Like Will Smith said in Independence Day: “I have got to get me one of these!”. Will S&W make the M&P Bodyguard available during or right after the Shot Show as they did the Shield when it came out?

Is the trigger the same terrible one that’s in the original bodyguard? That was why I got rid of my old one, if they make a smoother trigger I’ll be interested in giving them my business again

My wife bought the BG 380 with the laser when they first came out. She likes the weight, or lack of weight since she does not usually wear a belt, and has even gotten used to the trigger pull. However, this particular BG 380 has been back to S&W three times already, mostly for slide jams and FTFire.

She wants to hear from other users about reliability (and usability!) of the newer M&P 380 before trading in.

I just got one as well. I am wondering about a ‘perfect fit’ concealed carry holster.
Any thoughts? Thanks, John.

If you want it in a pocket, I LOVE the Recluse TS Solo. It’s got a rectangular “shield” on the outside so it looks like a wallet (zero gun-identifiable printing) from outside. It’s easy to draw without accidentally pulling the wallet, and has full trigger guard protection.

Mine has over 550 rds thru it never a problem, goes bang every time i pull the trigger no failure to fire or eject i use range ammo by scorpion for practice still shoots it good.
