Richard_PublisherMy name is Richard, and I welcome you to GunsHolstersAndGear.com. I’m the founder and publisher of this site. I also write the vast majority of the content found here.

I’m just a regular guy sharing information about guns and other gear that I think you may be interested in.

I don’t have an engineering degree, nor did I spend time in any special forces units. I’m just a normal guy with a fairly typical life. Prior to starting GunsHolstersAndGear.com, I worked for more than a decade as a police officer, wrote for a few small newspapers and worked as a freelance sports photographer.

I’ve got a family, a budget and the same worries and stresses that you do. I like writing, sharing information about guns and hope you join in the many conversations we have on this site.

Bias in Reviews, Reporting

Every media outlet, including this one, has biases and influences that affect how information is presented. The difference between this site and most other media outlets is I tell you what mine are.

I do not accept advertising on this website. This means that I am not held hostage by advertisers that threaten to walk with their money if I report negative things about their products. Any contributors to this site will disclose if they benefit in any way from any of the manufacturers in the shooting industry.

I do not accept paid reviews or product placements. There are many web sites in the firearms community that will only run news or reviews about a product if the manufacturer pays for that review. Nothing on GunsHolstersAndGear.com is here for any reason other than I chose to write about it. No contributions from manufacturers will be accepted except in extraordinary circumstances and will be fully disclosed.

I am not financially invested in the firearms or outdoors industries. I do not benefit, nor am I harmed by, fluctuations in the stock market or any company’s success or failure. Any of the writers that provide content to this site will fully disclose any investments that they have in these industries.

I do write for other media outlets, including some in the firearms industry. These include Athlon Outdoors, The Firearms Blog and Gun Mag Warehouse. I do not speak for them, nor they for me. However, the people running these organizations are of the highest caliber and I am proud to be associated with them. This does not mean I agree with every article published. But then, I’m sure they disagree with some of the things I publish as well. None of these organizations dictate what I choose to write or report on this site.

Earning Your Business

GunsHolstersAndGear.com generates income solely through the use of affiliate links. These links will take you to partner sites like Brownells, the National Rifle Association and Amazon. If you choose to use one of these links and make a purchase while there, I earn a small commission on that sale.

The links do not affect your purchase price. I do not get to see what any individual purchases.

Through the affiliate links, I earn a small commission – about 4-5% on average. This commission literally allows me to feed my family. Any money beyond our household needs goes back into growing this site and expanding what I am able to do for you.

The concept is simple: I provide you with good information for free. When you would like to make a purchase, you can use one of my affiliate links. In exchange for sending them a customer, the affiliate companies pay me a small “finder’s fee” based on your purchase amount.

Yes, the possibility of bias remains: I could recommend products that perform poorly in the hopes readers may buy them and I make a quick buck. However, that would be extremely poor thinking on my part. Not only would that be ethically wrong, but it would undermine my credibility and good name. That’s simply not something I’m willing to do.

If you need examples, check my review of the book Legally Armed or the evaluation I did of the Factor Cossatot 1000 XL flashlight. These are just two examples of gun related products that failed to meet my expectations, and I recommend against buying.
