New Magpul All-Steel MBUS

By Aaron on April 29, 2013 No Comments

Magpul Industries Corporation has been in the news lately with their bold stand for gun owners and gun rights.  When the Colorado elected officials voted to limit law-abiding citizens use of high capacity magazines, Magpul immediately put out a press release stating that they would be moving their business out of state.

Now in the midst of their big move Magpul has announced the release of new furniture for AR-15 style rifles and the venerable 1911 pistols.

MBUS Gen II

Magpul has already produced a very popular AR-15 flip down sights in the original and Gen II MBUS (Magpul Back-Up Sight).  Made with the same high quality polymer construction as their extremely popular PMags, Magpul’s original MBUS sights have found great popularity and high reviews for durability and function.  The original MBUS was lightweight, yet sturdy, and used a nice spring-activated mechanism to flip the sight into shooting position.  The user could then simultaneously press two levers on opposite sides of the sight to fold the MBUS back into a low profile position.

Google Translates Gun Reviews

By Richard on April 26, 2013 4 Comments

YouTube is probably the most popular video site on the internet.  It has been a great place for gun people to share information, do reviews and even land gigs within the industry.  As many of you likely know, Google owns YouTube.  The folks at Google have brought a lot of innovation to the technology world, but they haven’t quite managed to perfect turning speech into text.

iceland you tube

YouTube automatically produces a closed caption text file for all uploaded videos.  These files allow the hearing impaired to read what is being said in the video.  This is a great concept, but it isn’t perfect.

I’m not sure if the problem is in the coding or just that there are too many specialized terms in the shooting world for Google to get the transcribing of gun reviews right.  Regardless, the results of the transcription errors can run from gibberish to some humorous statements.  Take a few of these for example.

Streamlight TLR-2 G Review – Green Laser, White Light

By Richard on April 25, 2013 3 Comments

Want a powerful white light with green laser for your firearm? Take a look at this Streamlight TLR-2 G review for details on a very impressive unit that is rugged and doesn’t take up a lot of space.

Streamlight TLR-2 G Review

Announced earlier this year, the TLR-2 G combines a bright light and a green laser aiming device in one unit.  This allows a home owner or police officer the ability to mount one device on their handgun or long arm, reducing weight and size issues compared with multiple different units that would otherwise be needed.

Streamlight introduced the use of a green aiming laser in this device, which is said to be more visible than red lasers.

To see if the TLR-2 G passes muster, I obtained a unit and ran several tests on it for this review.

White Light

Weapon-mounted lights are nothing new.  However, their use is something that is far from universal.  Based on my own observations, very few armed citizens have them on their carry gun and probably only half (or less) of police officers have them mounted to their pistols.

We all know the first rule of a gunfight is to have a gun.  But, without being able to properly identify your threat, how do you know that it is time to shoot?  And once that decision is made, wouldn’t it be easier to hit your attacker if you could see him or her?  Having a bright light mounted on your pistol can make all the difference under stress.

Iver Johnson 1911A1 Carbine

By Richard on April 22, 2013 7 Comments

The Iver Johnson 1911A1 Carbine is a new rifle that appears to mate a 1911 pistol to a AR-style rifle.  It is chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge and looks like it retains all of the normal 1911 controls, grip safety and more.

Iver Johnson 1911A1 carbine

The gun has a M4-style stock.  Additionally, it looks to have a removable carry handle, removable front sight and a single Picatinny rail on the top of the rifle upper.  From the photo, you can see there is a charging handle on the left side of the weapon.  The barrel appears to be about 16″ in length.  Pricing is already listed as $623.95 on some websites.

The same general thing has been tried before with kits that convert various pistols to carbines.  Those kits include the Hera-Arms CPE, SIG Sauer ACP, and the CAA Tactical RONI.  The Iver Johnson 1911A1 Carbine looks like it goes a step farther and makes the unit appear more permanently attached.  Of course, that may not be accurate.

Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4×20 Scope Review

By Richard on April 18, 2013 5 Comments

Looking for a variable-power, high-quality scope for your AR-15?  Consider the Mark AR series of rifle scopes from Leupold.  These scopes offer extremely clear optics, excellent magnification and the durability you need when taking a rifle into the field.

leupold mark ar 1.5-4x20

I had a chance to test a Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4×20 with the company’s integrated mounting system recently, and I have been pleased with its performance.

In the Mark AR series, Leupold offers four different magnification scopes:

  • 1.5-4x 20
  • 3-9x 40
  • 4-12x 40
  • 6-18x 40

The glass was extremely clear with no visible imperfections, distortions or clouding.  As a long time photographer, I have a deep appreciation for good glass.  This Mark AR scope was as clear as any I’ve ever used.

Streamlight TLR-1s HP Review

By Richard on April 5, 2013 3 Comments

If you are looking for a high-powered weapon light for your long gun, take a look at the Streamlight TLR-1s HP.  It is a durable, reasonably priced unit that throws a lot of blinding light.

Streamight TLR-1s HP Review

I obtained a TLR-1s HP weapon light for review several months back and have been giving it a good workout ever since.  Although it will attach to the Picatinny rail on a number of my pistols, due to the size of the reflector this light has been used exclusively on a rifle.

Nuts and Bolts

The light easily attaches to an accessory rail in just a few moments, and requires no more than a coin to lock it into place.  The mount has a spring-loaded spring that, when pressed, allows you slip the light onto a Picatinny rail.  Then the screw is hand tightened to lock the light into place.  Using a coin you can then turn the screw another 1/4 to 1/2 turn to really lock it down.

With the light attached to the forward rail of a Rock River AR-15, I shot hundreds of full power 5.56 NATO rounds through the gun.  The Streamlight stayed locked into place and did not need any additional tightening or adjustment.

CRKT Foresight Review

By Aaron on April 1, 2013 1 Comments

The CRKT Foresight from renowned knife designer Ken Onion is one of the company’s latest offerings.  The Foresight is a folding knife with several unique designs that a lot of knife enthusiasts will like.

CRKT Foresight Review

If you are not familiar with Onion, he has been producing knives since 1991 and was inducted into the Blade Magazine Hall of Fame back in 2008.  He also holds 36 patents for his designs, and is credited with being the first knife designer to produce a commercially successful assisted opening mechanism in 1996.

The Foresight Blade

When starting this CRKT Foresight review, the blade jumped right out to me.  The shape of the blade reminded me of the Gurkha Khukuri knives.  The Foresight blade gradually gets larger the further it extends from the handle, until it begins a distinctive curve into the point.  This deep bellied drop point blade design is a Ken Onion signature item.

The top of the blade starts out level with the top of the handle, but then begins a downward curve in the last third of the blade.  The combination of larger mass on the bottom with distinctive curve up, and the downward curve from the top creates a visual of the old Khukuri knives.  I know it doesn’t have the trademark bend of the Khukuri, but that is the image jumped out at me when I first saw the Foresight.

The Foresight has two options for blade edge.  A standard razor-sharp cutting edge, and a combination razor-sharp and triple-point serration edge.  Both blade styles have a non-glare Titanium-Nitride finish, and are made with AUS-8, 58-59 HRC steel.
