Heym SR21: Marine Corps Is Looking for a Few Good Rifles

By Richard on October 30, 2009 1 Comments

heym_sr21_01aThe Marine Corps announced in August they are looking for a sniper rifle chambered in .300 Win Mag. One of the rifles the Corps may be looking at is the Heym USA’s SR21 sniper rifle.

Heym is known for high end double guns, both rifles and shotguns.  Peruse the Heym website and you will see many photos of dangerous game taken by their customers in Africa.  Interested in buying one of their guns?  MSRP is “contact us.”  I’m thinking that might be a touch out of my price range.  In fact, I would get in trouble with my wife if she knew I was even looking at their guns.

Heym’s standard SR21 can be seen on the Heym site.  The Marine Corps has the sniper version for T&E.  I’ve seen the standard SR21 in .300 Win Mag sell around $4000.

So why does the Marine Corps want a .300 Win Mag rifle?  The Corps wants to engage targets beyond 800 yards.  The problem?  Many of their snipers do not have the skills to reliably hit targets at 800 yards.

In the article Experts: New rifle not answer to sniper issues, Dan Lamothe reports that a lack of training facilities with realistic targets and the inability to retain Marines are two reasons that Marine snipers may not be able to utilize the added range of the .300 Win Mag.

STI Apeiro

By Richard on October 30, 2009 No Comments

From STI:

sti_apeiro_01aSTI is proud to announce it’s newest innovation: the Apeiro model. Integrating patented 2011 technology with classic 1911 design, the STI Apeiro double stack is a high capacity pistol that carries John Browning’s design into the 21st Century.

Utilizing the legendary Schuemann “Island” barrel and built on the patented modular steel frame with polymer grip, the Apeiro 2011 delivers the traditional features of a 1911 and allows the added benefit of high capacity magazines.

The innovative frame design preserves the 17° angle of the grip in relation to the slide, original to the 1911. The essential design element for high capacity, the polymer grip, allows for double stack magazines without over-sizing the circumference of the grip, which remains comparatively the same as the circumference of a 1911.

The Apeiro 2011 couples STI’s patented receiver with all the most desirable accessories in a factory firearm to produce a pistol that is as beautiful as it is reliable. The controls are STI International’s stainless steel ambidextrous thumb safeties and knuckle relief high-rise beavertail grip safety.

sti_apeiro_02aThe full length stainless steel bar stock slide features STI’s unique sabertooth rear cocking serrations and is cut to match the Schuemann barrel. The barrel is a 5.0″ fully ramped, fully supported “island” bull barrel, with the sight milled in to allow faster recovery to point of aim.

This pistol comes standard with an STI square hammer, patented STI trigger system, STI S-7 sear, and titanium strut for smooth, reliable function. The Apeiro 2011 has custom engravings on the polished sides of the (blued) stainless steel slide, stainless steel magwell, STI adjustable rear sight, Dawson fiber optic front sight, and a blued frame.

  • Caliber -  9×19, .40 S&W, .45ACP
  • Frame - STI Patented Modular Steel
  • Grip - STI Patented Modular Polymer
  • Slide - Unique
  • Slide – Features STI Sabertooth Rear Serrations , “Island” Barrel Cut

Gen 4 Glock: A Look at the New Features

By Richard on October 29, 2009 39 Comments

The Gen 4 Glock pistols are here…sort of.  (12/18/09 update: First photo of the Gen 4 Glock can be seen here.)

glock_4thgen_01a1Glock has had some of the new Gen 4 pistols in the hands of some industry insiders and police agencies for testing purposes. Based on some public statements and documents, a person can reasonably speculate on what the new Glock pistols will be like.

A brief disclaimer: I have not held, touched, or seen the new Glock pistols yet. I am not bound by any NDA’s as are most people who have seen them. All of the information provided here has been passed on to me from various sources or obtained from public documents. I do not guarantee that any of the following are accurate…but I believe some of these are rock-solid. Other speculations are educated guesses.

Have no doubt, the Gen 4 Glock pistols will be a significant evolution for the Glock platform. Pressure from the Smith & Wesson M&P and other pistols is heating up the law enforcement market. Several large agencies have defected from the Glock to the M&P. And this is one thing Glock cannot abide.

News Report on the Swiss and their Guns

By Richard on October 28, 2009 No Comments

swiss_newsSomeone e-mailed me a link to this September TV news report on the Swiss and their guns.

As many of you know, Switzerland requires military service from its citizens.  Those citizens are then issued rifles, which they keep after their discharge from military service.  The intent of the Swiss government is to have a ready militia of citizens able to fight off any aggressor.

Unfortunately, even in an enlightened country like Switzerland, anti-gun morons do exist.  This news report takes a pretty even-handed look at the policy, how families enjoy the shooting sports together, and what a few anti-gun zealots are claiming.

It is worth watching.

New Online Magazine for AR Rifle Hunters and Enthusiasts

By Richard on October 28, 2009 No Comments

ar_guns_hunting_01aGrand View Media Group, publishers of Grand View’s Outdoors and other hunting magazines, launched a new digital magazine called AR Guns and Hunting.  This new online magazine is completely free.

The name of the magazine gives you a pretty good idea on what the articles are about.  What is nice about AR Guns and Hunting is the ability to incorporate “new media” into the design to give a richer user experience, while maintaining a traditional magazine feel.  So rather than only the nice photos you would find in a print publication, AR Guns and Hunting adds video and audio into the articles.

Concerned that this magazine is only looking at the .22 caliber version guns?  Don’t be.  AR-15′s in their various configurations are covered, as are the AR-10 series rifles.

If you like the AR platform guns, take a look.

The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry by Massad Ayoob

By Richard on October 27, 2009 No Comments

ayoob_ccw_book_01aProlific gun writer Massad Ayoob is recognized around the world as one of the foremost experts on the concealed carry and use of firearms.  Not only has he written for more than three decades on the subject, he has also taught citizens on the use of deadly force through his Lethal Force Institute.  Additionally, he has been called as an expert witness in trials all across the United States of lawfully armed citizen who have been wrongly accused of using force.

Who better is there to write a comprehensive book on concealed carry?

The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry was written by Massad Ayoob is designed to be a reference manual to the citizen who has decided to carry a firearm for protection.  Ayoob covers a wide range of topics including hardware, mindset, and the law.

I’ve carried a concealed firearm for more than 15 years, and I found this book to be a fresh look at carry methods and gear.  For the citizen brand new to concealed carry, this book should be one of your first purchases.  It can likely save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in holsters, belts, and even firearms.  Where no such book existed when I started carrying, I tried virtually every holster and carry style before finding out (the expensive way) much of what Ayoob discusses in the book.

The book starts with the fundamental question: “Why do we carry?”  From there, the book moves on to the legal aspects of self defense and the carrying of arms.  Ayoob then discusses in detail the selection of firearms, holsters, and ammunition.  Plus he writes about the pros and cons of different modes of carry and style of dress.  Ayoob wraps up the book with a discussion on the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) and the benefits it can provide to the concealed carry practitioner.

ayoob_ccw_book_03Ayoob does an excellent job in explaining the topics, and answering questions to anticipated questions.  The writing style is matter-of-fact and easy to read.  If you have read and enjoyed any of Ayoob’s articles in American Handgunner, then you will find the reading of The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry like a conversation with an old friend.

It is unfortunate that I should feel the need to spend any time talking of Ayoob’s character, but unfortunately there are a few Internet ninjas who have taken unfair shots at Ayoob over the years.  From behind the safety of their keyboards, some people have claimed that Ayoob is a bumbling fool and worse.

Let me state very clearly:  Ayoob is an expert as both an instructor and handler of firearms.  There are few lawyers who are as knowledgeable in the use of force as he is.  When Ayoob states something as a fact, you can bank on that information.

Some of the topics covered in The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry include, but are not limited to:

  • state laws and regulations
  • ammunition selection
  • dealing with the aftermath of a shooting
  • firearm choices
  • holsters
  • open carry
  • clothing for CCW
  • IDPA

ayoob_ccw_book_02aAyoob has written other books that are excellent companions to The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry.  In the Gravest Extreme is Ayoob’s book that teaches when deadly force can legally be used to defend oneself.  Although Ayoob talks about it in The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry, he states that readers should refer to In the Gravest Extreme for the best information on when force may be used.

Additionally, Ayoob suggests the book Stressfire for learning how to shoot under extreme stress.  I also suggest the video of the same name.  I read Stressfire many years ago, and learned a lot from it.  However, when I picked up the Stressfire video last year, it was a significant step forward in understanding the shooting concepts Ayoob puts forth.

The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry is an excellent book, and worth the $24.95 price tag.  As with a great many things, this book can be found much cheaper on Amazon, where $16.49 is a true bargain.

“Gen 4″ Glock is not “RTF2″ Glock

By Richard on October 27, 2009 No Comments

[Update 12/18/2009: Gen 4 Glock photo is here.]

The “Gen 4″ Glock is not the same as the RTF2 Glocks that were announced at the 2009 SHOT Show.

A lot of people were referring to the RTF2 finished Glocks as a ‘fourth generation’ Glock pistol, but they were not a generational change.  The Gen 4 Glocks are expected to have a different finish than the current generation, but the RTF2 finish is not likely to be it.

I have received a number of e-mails about the Gen 4 and RTF2 naming conventions, thus this post, which I hope clarifies the naming conventions.

The Gen 4 Glock is expected to be shown at the 2010 SHOT Show.
