Rock Island Armory 10mm 1911

Rock Island Armory 10mm 1911

Rock Island Armory has a line of 1911 pistols bearing the 2011 Tactical Series title.  These pistols are meant to honor the 100-year anniversary of the famed Model 1911, while showing off the latest advancements in pistol accessories for the legendary pistol.  One of the newer additions to the 2011 Tactical Series, is a single stack 10mm that premiered at last year’s SHOT Show, but its such a nice pistol that I wanted to share it in this year’s show coverage.  The other models in the 2011 Tactical Series include a traditional .45 ACP and a 9mm version of the pistol.

The Tactical 2011 VZ Grip 10 mm combines the 1911 concept and design, with modern features and materials.  In recent years Rock Island Armory has been steadily making a name for themselves by producing quality 1911 pistols at affordable prices.  This pistol caught my eye for its attractive profile, and the selection of the powerful 10mm.

SHOT Show 2014: Good and Bad Observations of the Online Media

SHOT Show 2014

[Editor’s Note: Click here for the SHOT Show 2020 coverage.]

Another SHOT Show has come and gone.  Even though we still have articles, photos and information to post from the show, I thought it might be interesting to post some of my observations of the media and media-related activities from the show that don’t fit neatly into any of the existing or coming articles.  This observation article is about the online or internet media (sometimes still called new media.)

Some New/Online Media Personalities Are Classless

Let’s start by pointing the harsh lens of reality at my contemporaries who exhibit poor qualities.  Most folks in the outdoor & shooting media are easy to work with.  However, like any group of people, there are always a few who stand out due to their lack of professionalism, arrogance or whining.  Unfortunately, the online shooting media has a few of these.  I can probably lump most of them into the categories of ‘gear whores’ and ‘douchebags.’

Remington R51 Photos and Information

Remington R51

I imagine that most of the gun community has heard of the Remington R51 by now.  If not here’s the basics:  it is a single-stack 9mm pistol based on a historic Remington pistol also called the R51.  It has been updated with modern manufacturing and metallurgy, but remains very similar to the original gun.

The Model 1873 is one of the classic American rifles.  For 2014, Winchester will be offering the rifles in .44-40 Win and .45 Colt now.

Additionally, the company will make a color case hardened 1873 rifle.  The color case hardened model will have a 20″ barrel and will come in .357 Magnum, .44-40 Win and .45 Colt.  MSRP will be $1,579.99.

Edge Arms Reliant Pistol: Quad Barrel .22 Magnum

I find the new Edge Arms Reliant pistol to be a very intriguing concealed carry handgun. It is a four barrel, subcompact pistol chambered in .22 WMR (aka .22 Magnum). A second pistol chambered in .17 HMR will also be manufactured. The pistol uses a break open design, not unlike the DoubleTap pistol.

A lack of a slide, cylinder and external hammer means the gun can be reliably fired from a concealed location (such as from within a jacket pocket*) or in contact with an assailant’s body with little chance of malfunction. Edge Arms highlights this fact on the company’s website, stating “shoots every time, cannot jam from ammo misfeed or ejection.”
