Firearms Guide

I hope the third edition of the Firearms Guide is better than the second edition.

I’m sorry, let me start over…

The third edition of the Firearms Guide was recently released.  The DVD claims to be the “world’s most extensive firearms, ammo and air guns reference guide,” with thousands of color photos, schematics and more.  It may be all of that.  If so, the guide may be worth the asking price.

What is the asking price?  Oddly, I could not find the price on the site until I clicked the “buy now” button and got whisked off to PayPal.  The price is $39.95.

However, based on my prior Firearms Guide review (second edition), I found some things that would make me hesitate before buying the updated edition.

INFORCE WML Weapon Light

INFORCE is making a weapon mounted flashlight that has a much sleeker look that many of the other options on the market.  The INFORCE WML design eliminates the need for tape switches and wires.  No wires or tape switches mean the decreased likelihood that something will get hung up on your rifle impairing your ability to deploy it.

The INFORCE light has an attachment system for mounting on any 1913 rail system (no tools needed), and the batteries can be replaced while the light is mounted.  Replacing the batteries while the unit is still mounted is a nice feature.

The activation switch is angled and has a safety lock-out lever to prevent accidental activation when you don’t want to be seen.  This is a really great feature for anyone carrying arms for defense of self or country.

The light throws 125 lumens of light and is said to have a “tight beam.”  A peak candela measurement is not given. Light modes include momentary and constant, strobe and a low power setting.  Run time is rated at two hours on a single 123A battery.

Ruger Gunsite Polymer Magazines

Ruger Polymer magazineRuger is now making polymer magazines for the Gunsite scout rifle.  One of the complaints about the metal magazines was the price:  $70 for the 10 round mag.  I like the Gunsite scout rifle, but at $70/mag it is a non-starter for me.  Sorry, but I’m not dropping $70 for a .308 rifle magazine.

Fortunately, Ruger wasn’t blind to the issue.  To resolve the cost problem, Ruger is now manufacturing polymer magazines of three, five and ten round capacities.  While not cheap, the polymer mags are much more reasonable at $39.95 each.  I can’t say that a retail price of $40 is appealing, but it is certainly less horrific than $70.

TAPCO Intrafuse Handguard for the AR-15

The TAPCO Intrafuse AR Handguard is a fine alternative to the traditional aluminum quad-rail that many AR-15 owners consider as standard equipment today. The Intrafuse handguard is made of high strength composite material, and has full-length Picatinny rails on the top and bottom with half-length Picatinny rails on both sides.

The bottom and side rails have detachable covers, while the top rail remains open at all times. The covers are made of Santoprene, described as a high strength flexible rubber material, and are designed to be modular to fit the shooter’s desires. The covers can be removed in a matter of seconds, and do not require any tools to do so.

The handguard is designed with numerous ventilation ports to keep the barrel of the rifle from overheating.

Foreign Weapons Field Tool Kit

brownells_foreign_toolsBrownells introduced the Foreign Weapons Field Kit, a tool kit designed to service Soviet-bloc firearms in the field.  This tool kit may be of great interest to Special Forces and other allied troops who work closely with the indigenous peoples of Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the thousands of military surplus firearms collectors here in the United States.

The kit contains tools for servicing a variety of Soviet-type foreign weapons, including the AK-47/AKM assault rifle, PK/PKM/PKMS 7.62mm machine gun, Dragunov SVD sniper rifle, DShK/DShKM 12.7mm machine gun, and RPG-7 grenade launcher.

The foreign weapons field kit lets you field-strip these weapons quickly for cleaning, maintenance, adjustment, and repair without the confusion and down time spent scrounging for the proper tools.
