SIG SAUER 551A1

By Aaron on February 29, 2012 6 Comments

SIG SAUER, Inc. combines the ingenuity of SIG SAUER GmbH in Germany and Swiss Arms AG in Switzerland. Long known for producing superior firearms, SIG SAUER has announced that it will begin production of the SIG SAUER 551-A1 as the civilian version of the SG 551 that is currently being used by the Swiss Army.

SIG SAUER 551A1 - Short Barrel Rifle version

The SIG551-A1 is a semi-auto version of the SG 551 that is American-built. The rifle uses an adjustable gas piston to operate a rotating bolt. The 2-point gas piston system allows for a cleaner, cooler shooting rifle, and promises long service life with reliable operation.

Ted Nugent Beats Piers Morgan in a First Round KO

By Richard on February 29, 2012 No Comments

Not only is the Motor City Madman a hard core rocker, he is also a well educated proponent of the Second Amendment.  But, I imagine my readers already know that.  What you may not have seen, though, is the verbal beat-down Ted Nugent gives Piers Morgan:

Morgan is a perfect example of the emasculated wienies that pass for “enlightened” members of the main stream media.  He takes whatever spoon fed pablum that someone gives him and offers only dry poo in return.

CZ550 Urban Counter Sniper Rifle

By Aaron on February 24, 2012 6 Comments

There are many names in quality sniper rifles, and CZ now appears ready to add their name to the contenders. CZ was showing off their CZ 550 Urban Counter Sniper rifle at the 2012 SHOT Show. The rifle design showed a lot of promise, and the materials addressed many needs of tactical operators. If the CZ 550 is made with the same care and craftsmanship of the famous CZ-75 or the new CZ P-07 Duty pistols, this rifle should begin making a name for itself in short order.

CZ 550 Sniper Rifle

This area of firearms is not one to be entered lightly, as the competition is fierce. There are heavy hitters in the form of Remington, Savage, Accuracy International, H-S Precision, and G&A Precision. In the European market, and a lessor influence in America, there is Steyr. The Remington 700 is perhaps the cornerstone of all American sniper rifles dating back to the 1960’s, and still holds a commanding influence and market share.

CZ 550 URBAN COUNTER SNIPER RIFLE

Chambered in .308 Winchester, perhaps the most widely used police sniper caliber in America, the CZ 550 looks to offer a few features to set it apart from some of the big names in this arena. At first glance the viewer immediately recognizes that this rifle is designed for compact carry and maneuvers. There seems to be a definite acknowledgment of Col. Jeff Cooper’s ideas and requirements for a scout rifle. This rifle is compact, . 30 caliber, and has a 10-round detachable magazine. The rifle comes with a olive green coated barrel, and a black stock with green paint looking splashes.

Thunder Ranch Mossberg 500 Shotgun

By Richard on February 24, 2012 2 Comments

Mossberg has gone out on a limb the past few years with some interesting designs such as the Mossberg Chainsaw in 2011 and the Tactical Lever Gun at the 2012 SHOT Show.  This shotgun is much more practical.

Mossberg Thunder Ranch shotgun

Branded with the Thunder Ranch logo, this shotgun was designed with Clint Smith.  Smith, known for his wry writing and no-nonsense approach to self-defense appears to have equipped this shotgun with the things to make it a good fighting firearm.

Features:

  • shorter length of pull
  • matte finish
  • sling (why don’t more people have them on their home defense gun?)
  • tri-rail for adding a light
  • stand off barrel (or as I’ve heard it described: a DNA catcher)

SureFire EarPro Update

By Richard on February 23, 2012 1 Comments

SureFire EarPro Sonic DefenderSureFire updated their popular EarPro line of passive hearing protection.  The new line of EarPro Sonic Defenders now come with a 26″ polymer lanyard to help you keep track of them.

I’ve never used the SureFire EarPro plugs before, but I have a friend who swears by them.  It seems the ear plugs block noise via a Hocks Noise Brake filter that passively reduces loud noise, but still allows normal sounds to pass through.  If you want to shut down all noise, you close a small plug on the ear plugs.

Shutting the plug takes the noise reduction to 24 dB.  No noise reduction numbers are provided for the “open” mode.  I would imagine quite a bit noise makes its way into the ear, but even a 10 dB reduction can be a big help.
