New Hornady Shotgun Slugs

By Richard on November 10, 2012 1 Comments

Hornady expanded slug

Several new Hornady shotgun slug loads have been announced at the 2013 NASGW Expo:  two Superformance shotgun slugs and an SST Lite Shotgun Slug.

The new Superformance slugs will be available in both 12 gauge and 20 gauge.  Both loads use a MonoFlex slug.  Originally developed for lever guns, the MonoFlex design uses a monolithic hollowpoint bullet with the famous Hornady Flex Tip.  The slugs are made from a gilding metal, instead of pure copper, to increase their strength and retain 95% of original weight.  This helps the slugs to penetrate deeply.

New Saiga-12 Details

By Richard on November 1, 2012 No Comments

saiga shotgun

We have more details on the new Saiga-12 being developed by Izhmash.

As I reported back in May, a new Saiga-12 shotgun has been designed for the competition market.  Currently, Izmash is showing the shotgun at various shooting events and expos and is planning on shipping it to the consumer market in late 2012 or in the early part of 2013.

The new Saiga-12 shotguns have a variety of features that make them more conducive to competition, including a push button magazine release, flared magazine well, Magpul CTR adjustable stock and a serious looking muzzle brake.  Right now, the shotguns are only planned in 12 gauge.

Taurus ST12 Shotgun

By Richard on September 26, 2012 3 Comments

The Taurus ST12 shotgun is a pump action, 12 gauge scattergun being made in Brazil.  The Taurus shotgun falls into the tactical arena, not in the sporting category, and is marketed as such.  The shotgun is not currently imported into the United States for civilian sales, but it is exported from Brazil for government purchasers.

Taurus ST-12 shotgun

The ST12 was first shown at the 2011 LAAD (a military arms expo that held in Brazil every two years,) but has yet to be shown by Taurus at the US-based SHOT Show.  In its stock configuration, the shotgun is obviously designed to appeal to the military and law enforcement markets.

The Taurus ST12 has a chamber that will take 2 3/4″ and 3″ shells.  The full-length tube magazine will take seven shells.  Barrel lengths of 18″ and 20″ are available.  The barrel has a stand off attachment for breeching duties.

ST12 muzzle device

The gun uses a fore end with a Picatinny rail on the bottom.  Presumably, one could attach a vertical grip or other device here.  There is a short tri-rail attached to the extended magazine tube that would allow a shooter to attach a while light or other device.  The front sight is a red fiber optic.  While I would prefer ghost ring-style sights, the fiber optic is still an improvement over a brass bead.

The Taurus shotgun’s buttstock uses a M4-style six-position stock with a rubber recoil-reducing pad.  The stock can also fold to the left of the gun, which allows a significant reduction in overall length.  In some photos, the stock appears to be the ATI tactical shotgun stock they make for the Remington 870.  In other photos, the stock is shown from the right side of the gun, concealing the folding point.  On those, the pistol grip now has more of a M4 look and the Taurus logo.

Taurus ST12 features

Click this photo to see a larger image of the various shotgun features.

A heat shield covers the barrel.  The receiver is made of aluminum.  The ST12 uses  a cross bolt safety like the one used on the Remington 870 line of shotguns.

It is unknown if Taurus has any plans to import the ST12 into the US.  If they do, price will certainly be a critical factor for the success of this shotgun.  Remington and Mossberg have a pretty tight grip on the tactical pump gun market, and those companies already have reasonably priced offerings.

More on the New Saiga-12

By Richard on June 27, 2012 No Comments

The new Saiga-12 appears to be on track for import into the United States according to information from Izhmash.  Additionally, overall shipments of firearms from Izhmash to the US is expected to “…increase significantly.”

The new Saiga-12 features a variety of modifications including a push-button magazine release, AR-type buttstock, a new gas system, a unique muzzle brake and more.  I gave a more complete run down on the Saiga-12 last month.

Izhmash is focusing on the police and competition markets for the new shotgun.  While the new Saiga wasn’t announced until recently, several competitors have been running the guns in the European circuit to test them out.  Several competitions have been won with the new guns according to Izhmash.

New Saiga-12 Shotgun

By Richard on May 29, 2012 2 Comments

Izhmash announced the development of a new Saiga-12 shotgun variant for practical shooting competition.  Saiga-12 fans will likely notice a few differences just from the photo:

Saiga-12

My Russian is not very good, but from what I was able to determine, the new Saiga-12 sports several new features, including:

  • long Picatinny rail on top of the receiver for optics
  • a new muzzle brake
  • compatibility with AR-style buttstocks
  • a new “push button” type magazine release
  • a flared magazine well
  • some type of integral hook on the magazines for carrying on the belt in competitions
  • reworked gas system
  • longer forearm

Thunder Ranch Mossberg 500 Shotgun

By Richard on February 24, 2012 2 Comments

Mossberg has gone out on a limb the past few years with some interesting designs such as the Mossberg Chainsaw in 2011 and the Tactical Lever Gun at the 2012 SHOT Show.  This shotgun is much more practical.

Mossberg Thunder Ranch shotgun

Branded with the Thunder Ranch logo, this shotgun was designed with Clint Smith.  Smith, known for his wry writing and no-nonsense approach to self-defense appears to have equipped this shotgun with the things to make it a good fighting firearm.

Features:

  • shorter length of pull
  • matte finish
  • sling (why don’t more people have them on their home defense gun?)
  • tri-rail for adding a light
  • stand off barrel (or as I’ve heard it described: a DNA catcher)
