Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4×20 Scope Review

Looking for a variable-power, high-quality scope for your AR-15?  Consider the Mark AR series of rifle scopes from Leupold.  These scopes offer extremely clear optics, excellent magnification and the durability you need when taking a rifle into the field.

I had a chance to test a Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4×20 with the company’s integrated mounting system recently, and I have been pleased with its performance.

2025 Update: While this scope is an awesome performer, it is no longer offered by Leupold. However, the company does have a replacement that is both affordable and an excellent performer: the Leupold VX-Freedom AR 1.5-4×20 riflescope.

I’ve had a chance to do some shooting with the VX-Freedom model, and I like it. You can get additional information and purchase the scope here. Likewise, you can purchase the Leupold scope mount here.

Heizer Defense .410 Pocket Shotgun

Heizer Defense is developing a single shot pistol they call the HD1 Pocket Shotgun. The pistol is chambered to fire both 45 Colt and .410 bore shotgun shells like the Taurus Judge. Unlike the Judge, the HD1 is smaller, flatter and fires…well…only one shot.

From a tactical standpoint, I would never recommend anyone rely on a single shot firearm for self defense. I don’t care what caliber it is, or even if it uses mercury-filled, exploding-tip kryptonite rounds. Relying on a one shot stop is poor tactical doctrine. But, does that mean this handgun doesn’t have a place in someone’s self defense arsenal?

I could possibly see carrying this as a third pistol. As a backup, I’d prefer a five-shot Smith & Wesson J-frame as a minimum. This would make a decent contact weapon since there is no slide that could be pushed out of battery. But then, my J-frame covers that specific shot pretty well too.

I am amused by the fact they are calling it a “pocket shotgun.” If I understand the legal ramifications of the production of these types of firearms, the barrel has to be rifled to avoid being labeled a shotgun and the 18″ barrel requirement. While I understand the marketing angle, technically it cannot be a shotgun unless the company goes all NFA with it. According to the Heizer Defense Facebook page, they are currently testing rifling with a 1:10 LH twist with six grooves.

The pistol will be available in both a stainless steel frame and in a titanium frame. The butt of the gun opens, allowing for the storage of two .45 Colt cartridges. The pistols should be available this spring. The new guns should be at the SHOT Show.

Heizer Defense is also showing another pistol called the HD2. The HD2 appears to be the same pistol they were developing with DoubleTap Defense. It is chambered in either 9mm or .45 ACP. The barrels swap out, allowing the shooter to change caliber as his or her taste dictates.

Even though the HD2 appears to offer twice the ammo capacity of the HD1, I still would not feel comfortable carrying it as a primary or backup weapon. Your mileage, of course, may vary.

What are your thoughts? Is a single, or even double, shot 45 Colt/410 handgun a viable self defense option for you? Under what circumstances?

Versa Max Zombie Slayer Shotgun

Had enough of the zombies? Not yet, I guess, considering The Walking Dead seems to be one of the most popular shows on TV.  Fortunately, Remington introduced the Versa Max Zombie shotgun to help quench the thirst for zombie-related gun gear.

The Versa Max is Remington’s newest autoloading shotgun, and in the past couple of years it has become very popular due to its ability to reliably digest all kinds of ammo. I’ve not had the chance to spend much time with one myself, but a lot of people are giving the Versa Max very positive reviews. So, what better gun to have in the apocalypse than a 12 gauge, semiautomatic shotgun that is not picky on with what ammo it will run?

Of course, the Zombie slaying shotgun is more about form than function. Remington just built the form on top of a reliable platform.

CMMG 50 Caliber Muzzle Loading AR15 Upper

At the 2012 SHOT Show, Aaron brought us a video of a muzzle loading, black powder AR-15 upper from CMMG. At that time, it was unknown if the company would actually bring this to market. Well…they have.

The one and only AR upper that turns your modern rifle into a black powder gun is a reality. It mounts to any mil-spec lower and is sure to get you some puzzled looks at hunting camp during black powder season.

Any normal 50 caliber projectile, including sabots, can be fired from this kit. Up to 100 grains of pelletized powder can be used to propel said projectile. To fire the gun, you insert the “Single Shot Sled” into the magazine well and chamber a primed, but otherwise empty, 5.56/.223 case into the chamber. Pull the trigger and the primer ignites the black powder. Boom.

Watch the video from the SHOT Show below to see how the gun is set up.

Stark SE-5 Express Grip – New AR15 Foregrip

Stark Equipment’s pistol grips have been praised by many, including the military and law enforcement, for their scientific approach to designing grips that fulfill the needs of the end-user. This year Stark has introduced a new product, and some additions to already produced products.

THE NEW SE-5 EXPRESS GRIP

Stark announced the new SE-5 Express Grip at SHOT Show, and I had the chance to speak with DJ Webber at their booth.

The SE-5 will be a fore grip for AR-platform rifles that is designed for shooters who grip the rail or hand guard at the same time as the grip when shooting. The SE-5 is unlike other grips that hang straight down that predominately require the shooter to place their hand completely on the grip, or perhaps wrap their thumb onto the hand guard. There have been several tactical trainers that have advocated this grip stance as a better way to control recoil and maintain accuracy even in rapid fire situations.
